We were lucky to catch up with Steph Nguyen recently and have shared our conversation below.
Steph, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
Throughout my life I always loved working with my hands. Music and food is my favorite way to communicate. As a child, I fell in love with the art of turntablism and DJ culture. It was something I was loved as a hobby at first but then it grew into an obsession and then eventually my full time career.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Supermcn4sty, privately known as Steph (they/them), is an open format DJ, producer, and social media manager based in Austin, Texas. Steph began perfecting their craft in 2017 within a few years time their experience has expanded to organizing successful benefit events for local/national charities, spinning at the hottest bars and nightclubs throughout Texas, weddings, DJing at music festivals such as SXSW in 2019 and 2022 as an official artist and a roster of events for Urban Outfitters, Frida Friday, Las Ofrendas, Future Front, American Institute of Architects, Informal Systems, just to name a few. Most notably in 2022, Steph was invited to perform the opening DJ set for Boiler Room in Houston, TX. Steph is deeply ingrained with Austin queer nightlife. They have held a residency at Neon Grotto called Slow Jams Sunday in 2022. In 2023, you can find Steph at their new weekly residency at My Oh My. The party is called Love Theory, it’s every Sunday from 8-12AM. The party emphasizes feel good music to reset your week. With Supermcn4sty as your sound selector, whether it’s variations of house and dance music, hip hop, dancehall, latin, r&b or any genre, Supermcn4sty represents precision, musical exploration, and an unbeatable energy/sound.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I think the most rewarding aspect of being a creative is doing work that I believe in. Being a creative means the work I do is authentic to me and the music I play matters to me.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Society needs to invest in people and the arts whether it be education, online engagement, business patronage, resources, government programs, financial grants, etc. We need to make the arts more accessible to all members of society! I have a deep belief in the transformative potential of art. It possesses the ability to forge bonds and foster a collective understanding, while also playing a significant role in building thriving, resilient communities.
