We recently connected with Stella Diver Wynters and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Stella thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. It’s easy to look at a business or industry as an outsider and assume it’s super profitable – but we’ve seen over and over again in our conversation with folks that most industries have factors that make profitability a challenge. What’s biggest challenge to profitability in your industry?
The biggest challenge with profitability in my industry is that there are too many drag entertainers in my industry who want to be full time entertainers. With the over saturation of entertainers it means less jobs for all of us. The best advice I can give any new or seasoned entertainers that are building a brand is perfect your brand and your look. Start reaching out to bars and restaurants that might benefit from having entertainment like drag but only if they can benefit from it as much as you can benefit from it.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I got into the business of drag about 2.5 years ago. I actually started about 10 years ago but I was in a relationship with someone who tore me down and I allowed it. Fast forward to 8 years later and I focused on everything I needed to create my look. The business of drag was very similar to the business of bar managing, I have been a bar manager/bartender for 10 years so when it came time to find funding for me and as an artist and to perform in bars I knew what needed to be done. I can’t give all the details I would like to but the biggest thing I can say is any entertainers looking to expand on their brand in bars and restaurants needs to prepare themselves for a lot of networking and to be able to work with the venue to make sure it’s profitable for yourself and that space. So know your worth and have something to offer the space.
Can you talk to us about how you funded your business?
Of course. Drag is not cheap, even if it looks cheap. I had my side hustle which was bartending to fund everything I needed for drag.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Ya so this one is easier said than done. You want to network as much as you possibly can. I know talking to people is hard or it’s exhausting but you want to talk to people out in bars or on social media. You want to put yourself in a position to engage as much as you can. Then there’s the posting on your socials about things you like and things that others might be interested in
