Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Steffon Seay. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Steffon, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Alright, so one thing we think people don’t talk about nearly enough is investments – either time or money. What’s one of the best or worst investments you’ve made and what did you learned from the experience?
One of the best investments I’ve made would be obtaining my business licenses of course, but also investing in my own equipment. As an artist I would spend more money paying for recording time, photo shoots, mixing and mastering sessions. To finally be able to obtain my own equipment has changed so much. I can now focus more on doing things for myself rather than spending more money on other sources. Now I am a source and I can help others. Cutting out expenses was a target goal for myself and to be able to save more money and invest that money is something I’m very proud of.
Steffon, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
As a youth, I was a writer in school. I would be apart of essay contests, then as a teenager is when I began the transformation of becoming a lyrical writer from close friends in school who influenced me to become a recording artist. Years later, I became more fascinated with the business side of things which allowed me to finally obtain my business license and become a fully independent artist with my own independent record label.
Working on my craft everyday, hitting the books and learning how to become a sustainable business owner and having a great supportive team around me kept me very disciplined because I seen in others, that they wanted me to succeed which meant we would succeed. I think what sets me apart from others is what I’m most proud of, which was becoming fully independent. Owning the rights to my music, being able to release when I want to and working when I want to work allows me to be more creative as opposed to me being rushed to work on specific tasks. I can set my own schedule and be more organized.
With having all these things I am able to help other artists by giving them advice on things I have succeeded in and as well as things I have failed in and learned from to become better at. I am now able to record inspiring artists, mix and master their music, give them connections with marketing and promotion, to where I can have a hand in helping someone else achieve their goals and success.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I would say having to depend on other people/sources to complete a task I wanted to achieve. For example, I would have to depend on my team as a teenager to do things for me which included finding me photographers, videographers, studio time, and performances. I wasn’t as business savvy back then so I wasn’t fully invested in myself as I am now. I wish I would’ve invested in myself fully at that time to where I wasn’t as dependent. Although I love the team I’ve been able to assemble throughout the years. I feel as if I burdened them with doing things for me as opposed to doing things with me. Now I am more involved with competing goals and tasks with them. Taking more responsibility vs giving responsibility, has made it an easier process.
We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
Now that I have just started my second business which is in the fashion industry, I wanted to give an opportunity for someone else that I see potential in to have ownership in their own as well. That person being the mother of my youngest child.
Not only does she have an eye for fashion, but she has the same drive that I see in myself. Allowing her to be the director of design, I would say gives her more of sense of involvement and responsibility.
This allows me to focus more on the music side of things for myself and having someone that I’ve in-trusted a part of my business in, is able to handle things when I’m not able to.
Which I believe she is more than capable to.
