We recently connected with Stefani-Nicole Castro and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Stefani-Nicole thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Being a business owner can be really hard sometimes. It’s rewarding, but most business owners we’ve spoken sometimes think about what it would have been like to have had a regular job instead. Have you ever wondered that yourself? Maybe you can talk to us about a time when you felt this way?
As a Serial Entrepreneur, I tend to have a lot to manage and have a lot on my plate. Unfortunately after over 20 years in business I have yet made it a priority to find a reliable team. I often think about the things I would have done differently and having a team would be at the top of my list. Truth is, I’ve always been able to do the tasks I’d ask of a team so I just did them but with the pressure of deadlines and the lack of staff often left me overworked and overwhelmed. It wasn’t until 2019 right before the pandemic that I started prioritizing and practicing balance in my life and business. Since then several additional businesses emerged and have been a blessing to my family and clientele.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am Stefani-Nicole Castro. I started my career as a Makeup Artist at 15 years old. With dreams and aspirations of being a prominent Makeup Artist, I started working on a makeup portfolio by trading services with photography students from a local art academy. During these collaborations I was expected to do makeup, hair,
styling and assist with poses. While several of those collaborations were great and broadened my skills I decided that after I continued to see the work published and only the photographer credited for the work that I would get a camera and learn the craft of photography as well. Once I learned the camera I began marketing myself as the “one-stop shop,” I did makeup, hair, photography and soon after I added on videography. At the time, my business relied on word-of- mouth and it still does til this day. I focused on professionals, small businesses and families. Soon after, I expanded my beauty business to more than just makeup. I started doing permanent makeup in 2013 and gained Esthetician license in 2015. In 2017, I launched Arched Brows Training Academy, a beauty school for aspiring Makeup and Permanent Makeup Artists. In 2019, right before the pandemic I started 3 product lines, Sleek Wink, Complexion Skincare and Curlielocs Haircare. All of which were a blessing to have during the pandemic, especially because my Esthetician business was mandated to shut down for 11 months.
In December of 2021, my family and I
I moved from California to Georgia which was the start of my bi-coastal work life. It was challenging at first but ultimately rewarding. In 2023, I gained my real estatee license in Georgia and I consider it an honor and a pleasure to help people find a home.
Have you ever had to pivot?
Transitioning in 2021 from California, a state where I started all my businesses to living in Georgia was quite the challenge but I was determined to make it work, I have consistently worked bi-coastally since that move and luckily my clients are the most amazing loyal clients I could ever dream of.
Although I still do a few of those services in the state of Georgia, I was open to doing something new. Real Estate had always been an interest of mine and after heavy prayer about what God wanted me to do in Georgia, He responded with real estate and I’ve been happily balancing my businesses ever since.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Early on in entrepreneurship I had to learn to do it all by myself. I was the photographer, videographer, makeup artist, etc not to mention the web designer, social media manager, accountant, janitor etc and while at the time I could do it all and it saved me tons of money. I think it made it that much harder to let go of some of those duties and overtime has made it hard to trust people with what I’ve built. If I could do it again I would welcome a team sooner into several aspects of my business. No telling where that collaboration could have taken any one or all of my businesses.
