We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Steeven Alvarez. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Steeven below.
Hi Steeven, thanks for joining us today. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
My parents have been instrumental in my success and who I am as a person and how I run my business. It’s hard to pinpoint just one thing that my parents did right. My dad is the ultimate example of hardworking and not letting your situation or circumstances dictate the outcome of your life. He does everything with best intentions and puts his faith in God first, which I’ve been able to see how he’s been blessed by doing so. My mother taught me how to love fiercely and protect what is yours. She taught me how to be independent and not to be the kind of man who depends or needs a woman to do something for him. She is resilient if one was to know all that she had to go through at such a young age. My parents being immigrants fought together to give my siblings and I the life that we have been blessed with today. They came to a country not knowing the language, having limited family and beat out the odds as to what society thought they should have based off of their circumstances.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I have been in the Real Estate/Financial Services Industry since 2016. Prior to being in my current industry I worked in Healthcare at a local Community Health Center here in Utah. I, like most people, grew up with the traditional ideology that the only way for me to be successful was to go to school and get a job that would provide me benefits (401k, health insurance, etc). I started working with this in company in 2010 and was able to work my way up. I started out working as a customer service representative. From there I got promoted to Outreach and Enrollment Team Lead helping patients who had never had health insurance before obtain insurance for the first time. My next promotion was to Clinic Director where I managed 3 clinics, a mental health clinic, school based clinic, and pediatric clinic. I learned so much and was able to find a real passion for helping people and helping develop staff to see their value and true potential. As I grew I started to have an urge to want more from life, but when you grow up with a traditional mindset and have friends and family with the same traditional upbringing you compare your life to theirs and you believe that you are doing okay in life so you become complacent. In the midst of all these changes is where I started to ask questions knowing that there was a reason why there were wealthy people and not so wealthy people. What were they doing differently? Who did they surround themselves with? Could I see myself as one of them? From there came my first eye opening experience. In 2012 I bought my very first home. By 2014 I was ready to sell and move closer to friends and family after being away from them for 2 years. I called my real estate agent that I had used to purchase my first home and he came over with a packet basically explaining how much I could sell my home for, what I would be charged, and how much I would net. Not knowing any better and not having anyone to talk to about the process and what options I had, I signed. The home sat for about 2-3 months. I got one offer and accepted it. The home sold 30 days later and I decided not buy again and move back in with my parents. After selling instead of being happy that I just made $20k on the sale I felt like I made a terrible mistake. I start seeing more and more how people had multiple properties and I thought how are they doing that? That’s when I realized that I was never properly educated or even given options as a young person as to how I would benefit by keeping my home and renting it out. I was let down by the people I confided in who get paid very handsomely for what they do. I decided in 2016 that I would go to school thinking I would get my real estate license and this would teach me everything I needed to know to be an investor. I was wrong. After passing my courses and exam I vowed I would help anyone with transparent information and options to make wise financial decisions in real estate even if that meant I’d lose a commission in the short term. As I tried building my business on the side from my full time job there were many administration changes and as part of the changes I was fired October 22, 2018. The feeling of being fired was one of the worse feelings. Especially when you sacrificed 8 years of your life and built relationships with people who you would most likely never see again. After I was fired I sat in my car confused and contemplating what to do. Bills still had to be paid, savings wont last forever if you don’t have an income to keep adding to it. I went back and forth on if I should reapply for jobs or take this license that I have and do something about it. At this point I had been licensed for almost 2 years only doing 3-4 deals total approximately. I made the decision to chase my dreams. I made the decision to take back control of my life and to never allow a company to dictate my value, to dictate weather I deserve a raise or a vacation, or to dictate whether I will be able to pay my bills. Being a new agent I had to find a way to separate myself from the thousands of other agents in Utah who has more money, experience, and marketshare than I had at the moment. A few years prior to that I had a friend teach me about life insurance and taxation and how the wealthy use certain products in order to maintain and transfer wealth. I decided to learn more and get my Life Producer license. The two biggest and wealthiest industries in the world are Finance and Real Estate. I realized that’s how I would provide value for my clients and become a resource for them past the closing table. My main goal of my business is to provide clients with knowledge as to how to create a real estate portfolio and how to protect that and transfer that under the umbrella of insurance. The financial concepts we as a team teach our clients are things they don’t teach us in school. If you try to find a “mentor” they want you to buy their product or most wont talk to you if you aren’t in a certain tax bracket. We take those barriers and provide that information for our clients in order to take those generational curses and turn them into generational wealth for them..
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
What has helped me build my business in this market has been the trait of hard work from my parents and also looking as people as people. When you stop looking as people as a paycheck and your financial gain your business will change completely. Give people the service you would give your family or close friends. Be genuine and honest in all your interactions. All good deeds always come back around.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I was able to build my following by showing people on my social medias that I am a real person. Most of the time we get caught up in the hype of needing to feel like a professional 24/7 and showing a facade that is not really our lives. Social media nowadays is your business card. Show them who you are. Mix some business with personal things. Remember its your social media. You can be as open as you want to be. Have fun with it and don’t overthink it.
