We were lucky to catch up with StarR Logan recently and have shared our conversation below.
StarR, appreciate you joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I began my journey into music at a very young age, singing as early as 3 years old. Growing up in a musically inclined family, I was surrounded by melodies and rhythms that influenced my passion. By the time I was 7, I started learning to read and write music, which laid the foundation for my artistic expression.
One of my fondest memories is spending time with my grandfather in Detroit, where he would teach me about recording and publishing during our fishing trips. This hands-on experience sparked my interest in the music industry. Throughout high school, I dreamed of singing professionally and took steps toward that dream, but I decided to fully commit to it only after college.
I auditioned for various shows like American Idol and Sunday Best, encountering some setbacks along the way that made me consider giving up. While I didn’t pursue a formal education in music—largely due to advice to choose a more stable career—I found a balance as an educator and a performer. I’m grateful for the opportunities I’ve had to share my own songs and connect with others through my gift, all while building a fulfilling career in education.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I consider myself a resilient lover girl who has navigated numerous challenges in life, including experiences in foster care, battling breast cancer, and coping with the loss of loved ones. Through it all, music has been my sanctuary—a powerful outlet for expressing the vast array of emotions I’ve encountered throughout different stages of my journey. My faith and music keeps me in my soft era.
Growing up, being part of bands and choirs provided me with a much-needed escape. These experiences not only taught me discipline but also helped me discover my voice and purpose. For a long time, I was hesitant to share my own songs, worried that I wasn’t good enough or that no one would want to hear from me. However, during a talent show in my senior year of high school, I took a leap of faith and performed one of my original songs. The overwhelming positive response from the audience was a turning point for me, with many people approaching me afterward to express their support.
In college, I began sharing more music, including covers on my Instagram page. My diagnosis of breast cancer ignited a deep desire to pursue music more seriously. A year after entering remission, I headlined my first concert and soon released my debut album, ‘Zoetic,’ on major streaming platforms. My second project, infused with themes of love, captures the essence of my heart, reflecting the ups, downs, heartbreaks, and joys of romance.
What sets me apart is my willingness to share my true feelings and desires in my music; it’s deeply personal and honest. My music is not just art to me; it’s a reflection of my life. I’m not seeking fame; rather, I want to share pieces of myself through my art whenever I can.
Not everyone will relate to what I have to say or create, and not everyone will like it, but I’m okay with that because I believe I am meant to create. I was born to sing, and the people I am meant to reach will understand that.
I can’t imagine who I would be without music.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
When I was 25, I faced a life-changing moment when I was diagnosed with breast cancer, despite having no family history or genetic markers. It was a shock, but strangely enough, I wasn’t scared. I had discovered the tumor myself, only to find out that it wasn’t just one but 18 tumors scattered across my left breast. The journey that followed was intense—I went through months of chemotherapy, had to undergo open-heart surgery, and ultimately had a double mastectomy.
Compounding this experience was the timing of the COVID-19 pandemic, which started just a month after my diagnosis. This meant that I had to navigate most of my appointments, procedures, and recovery largely alone. During that time, music became my safe haven. I poured my emotions and experiences into songwriting, creating what would eventually become my first album.
I truly believe that God allowed me to go through this challenging season for a reason. Now, as a 5-year survivor, I can confidently say that I am a stronger and better woman because of everything I’ve faced—not just because of cancer, but because I learned about my own resilience. Life is too short to wait on dreams or let fear hold you back. My journey has made me think deeply about my legacy, and it has pushed me to stop worrying about what others might think. Matthew 5:16 encourages us with the words, “In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” God is the reason I am here today; He is the foundation of my story. God inspires my songs and fuels my desire to sing. I have so much to share, and as long as I am alive, I believe I should share my gifts and talents with others.

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
To best support artists, I believe that focusing on local initiatives is essential. One of the simplest yet most impactful ways to do this is to attend shows, even if they’re not free. Every ticket purchased helps sustain artists and their creative endeavors. Sharing flyers on your social media pages and at your workplaces can greatly increase visibility and engagement for local talent.
Streaming local music and adding it to your playlists is another way to support, as it helps artists gain traction on platforms and reach wider audiences. Taking the time to leave reviews or provide feedback can be incredibly encouraging for artists, letting them know their work resonates with listeners.
It’s important to recognize that while we often support well-known artists we may never meet, there are countless talented individuals right in our own communities—especially in places like St. Louis—who are equally deserving of our attention and appreciation. Many hardworking artists don’t receive the recognition they deserve, and it really can be as simple as showing up to their events and sharing their work with others. Let’s make an effort to uplift and celebrate the creativity that surrounds us by being active participants in our local arts scene.
