We were lucky to catch up with Starla Fitch recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Starla thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Do you have any thoughts about how to create a more inclusive workplace?
Our “workplace” is a worldwide YouTube audience and board game convention goers. Our business was created because of the lack of diversity, equity and inclusion we saw and experienced in the board game hobby. With the launch of our channel on YouTube, we have been able to put a spotlight on this issue and have been actively working to show the importance of diversity, equity and inclusion. We have found a lot of support for what we bring to the hobby as a whole.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Our Family Plays Games, LLC is a family-owned business committed to fostering diversity and inclusion in the modern board game community. Our mission is to introduce the hobby to underrepresented groups and families from all backgrounds. Our journey began in 2018 by sharing board game experiences on social media, and in January 2020, we launched our YouTube channel. By June of that year, we were featured on Good Morning America. Since then, we have been recognized by NBC News Online, Senet Magazine (UK), Ligadas.com (Brazil), and various YouTube channels, podcasts, and local media in Omaha, NE. We are also in a recently released documentary called, The Hobby.
In addition we host quarterly community game nights in Omaha for both new and experienced gamers, make special appearances at board game conventions across the country, and collaborate with publishers worldwide.
Above all, we take pride in raising awareness about modern board gaming within underrepresented communities and providing board game content from a diverse perspective.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Our earnest and approachable manner; our relevant and in-depth coverage of board games and guest appearances at board game conventions. We have crafted our content to speak to novice and experienced gamers alike. We’ve worked with a variety of publishers, designers and content creators which has helped us build our brand and establish our presence in the hobby.
How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
We have several ways to keep in touch with followers, social media, YouTube, website and in person appearances at board game conventions. We do a weekly Live Stream on YouTube which as really helped us grow our audience and brand loyalty, because it gives our audience the opportunity to interact with us directly and in real time.
