Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Star Grace. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Star, thanks for joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
The “Shoyu Sugar Garlic Ginger Chili Pepper Water” project/design carries a profound and meaningful concept inspired by the taste of Hawaii’s Moai. This design is an artistic representation of the relationship that can be found within a close-knit group of friends who come together to offer support across various aspects of life, including social, financial, health, or spiritual interests.
The project draws its significance from five essential ingredients, commonly found in every home in Hawaii. These ingredients symbolize the diversity of individual strengths and the unique qualities each member of a Moai brings to the group. In the same way that these ingredients are distinct and serve different purposes when used separately, they come together harmoniously to create a delicious and balanced blend.
The “Shoyu” (soy sauce) represents the salty element, “Sugar” adds a touch of sweetness, “Garlic” brings its unique and pungent flavor, “Ginger” offers its characteristic warmth, and “Chili Pepper” contributes a bit of fiery spice. These ingredients, like the members of a Moai, each have their own identity and strength. Yet, when combined, they create something exceptional, just as a Moai collectively enhances the lives of its members.
This project serves as a powerful reminder that while individuality is vital, there is immense strength and value in coming together with friends and loved ones, much like the harmonious blend of flavors in these ingredients. It’s a beautiful representation of unity and the belief that “together is always better,” a sentiment deeply rooted in the spirit of Moai Hawaii.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Hi, I’m Star Grace, the founder of Moai Hawaii. I was born and raised in the beautiful town of Kailua Kona, Hawaii, and I’m proudly 100% Okinawan. My brand, Moai Hawaii, draws its inspiration from my Okinawan heritage and the unique challenges and joys of being a stay-at-home mom.
Okinawans are notorious for their longevity, and a key factor in this is their strong belief in the concept of a “Moai” — a close-knit group of lifelong friends who provide support in various aspects of life, be it social, financial, health-related, or spiritual. As a mother of two little ones under the age of two, my perspective on quality time has shifted dramatically. Going out became a daunting prospect, and having guests over seemed equally overwhelming with the chaos of daily life.
Yet, amidst the dishes, laundry, and scattered toys, there were those special individuals who saw past the mess and offered their unwavering support. They’d come over, lending a hand with the chores, and simply be present so I didn’t have to face the challenges alone. It was in tribute to these wonderful friends, my personal Moai, that I began crafting tea towels — a symbol of the comfort and humanity they brought back into my life during this new and demanding chapter.
Moai Hawaii specializes in screen-printed creations, ranging from tea towels to keiki (children’s) and adult clothing, as well as tote bags. My introduction to the art of screen printing was through my involvement with Holoholo Ministries in the Philippines. Our annual trips involved screen printing camp shirts for the youth at Camp Lokahi, a project very close to my heart.
Growing up in a family of missionaries, the Philippines felt like a second home to me. Witnessing the process of creating those shirts left an indelible mark on my memory. The opportunity to try my hand at screen printing was a moment of deep significance for me. It’s a feeling that has stayed with me, and writing about it now, I’m reminded of the sheer joy and pride I felt in crafting my very own shirt. This sense of fulfillment and nostalgia is what I aim to infuse into every piece I create.
What sets Moai Hawaii apart is that each item is meticulously hand-screened by me, ensuring that every shirt, tea towel, and tote bag is not only special but uniquely tailored for its recipient. This personal touch underscores the genuine care and love that goes into every piece, making it a cherished addition to anyone’s collection.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most fulfilling aspects of being an artist for me boils down to two key points. Firstly, there’s an indescribable joy in seeing my finished products. It’s a testament to the heart and soul I pour into each creation, and watching my inventory grow is simply remarkable. Witnessing my designs materialize into something tangible, something I can touch and feel, is incredibly gratifying.
Secondly, participating in pop-up events holds a special place in my creative journey. It’s a uniquely rewarding experience. Meeting people face-to-face and sharing the story and passion behind Moai Hawaii is something I cherish deeply. These interactions create a genuine connection and allow me to convey the distinctive narrative that fuels my artistic endeavors. It’s in these moments that I find a profound sense of fulfillment, knowing that it’s through these relationships that the true heart of Moai is nurtured.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My creative journey is driven by God, my husband, my kids, my family, and my own little support system or “Moai.” They’re the ones who cheer me on and make it all possible. I truly believe that what I create carries the heart of Moai, inspiring others to build their own close-knit groups. It could be as simple as sharing a meal or working together on everyday tasks—those moments matter. I hope that through their own Moai, they’ll feel a strong sense of love and support, leading to a happier, more fulfilling life. This mission isn’t just personal, it’s about spreading positivity far and wide.
