We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Star Bourgoyne a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Star, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
My most meaningful project was my photoshoot at an Adobe Road wine-tasting event. This project means a lot to me because it was one of my first legit photoshoots, and this shoot was one of the first times I felt like an artist. I was nervous going into this shoot because I was still trying to find my way as a photographer, and shooting at a public event with people watching was initially intimidating. Despite my nerves, I was able to get some really good shots of this event, and I was able to walk away with some new things I learned from the experience. I learned how to get comfortable taking up my rightful space as a photographer at public events and not being shy with my camera. I also learned to shoot in new lighting conditions and from different angles. I proved to myself that I genuinely had talent with my camera and was good at what I do. It was a formative shoot for me, and my growth from this project makes it memorable.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I became an artist when I was around 16. while in high school took my first photo class. I got my first camera and started practicing after the first few weeks of the course. I began by taking pictures of my friends, local landscapes, and photos in my class, and the next thing I knew, I had my first paid gig. after seeing the art that I was able to create, I knew that I had to fully bet on myself and go after my dreams as a creative. I eventually started to practice other art mediums, such as graphic and clothing design; since then, I’ve just been doing what I love and perfecting my craft. I am most proud of how I solidified my style as a photographer. When I first started, I struggled to find what set me apart as an artist. But after a few of my first photoshoots, I realized that my style includes bold colors, unique angles, and the clarity of the texture and details in my work. I am very proud of my career as a creative, and I am excited to continue growing as an artist.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of my job as a creative is when clients are in awe of the visions I can capture for them. It motivates me when my clients tell me how well I was able to execute the vision they had for the project I’m helping create. It’s rewarding because those moments reassure me that I’m making progress and growing as an artist and that I actually have what it takes to make it in my field.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
I think the best way to support artists is to encourage them to bet on themselves and actually pursue their dreams as artists rather than convince them that their art should be limited to a hobby. One of the hardest things artists have to overcome is the stigma from society that art isn’t a legit or safe career and that it’s best left as a hobby. It is essential as an artist to feel like our work is seen and appreciated and that we are taken seriously. We work hard to perfect our craft, and we deserve to be respected. This is why the best way to support artists is to simply encourage them and give them their flowers for the hard work that they do and the talent that they work hard to hone in on.
