We recently connected with Stan CLMG and have shared our conversation below.
Stan, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you take us back in time to the first dollar you earned as a creative – how did it happen? What’s the story?
It’s all about networking, I had a college professor who had many connections within the media industry and my senior year she said my senior project which was a music documentary was one of the best projects she had seen in years. So fast-forward I’m working as an intern at the college news station and she came to me and asked if I still made music and I said yes. So she gave me a number to this director that was shooting a show for A&E and they were looking for an artist to rap for the theme song for the show.
So I went and recorded the song and got paid $500, it was the first time I ever made money from music! And even though the show didn’t get picked up by A&E I learned a valuable lesson, never forget to network and build relationships!
Stan, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I started on the radio street team for about a year & a half. We would basically promote for different artists by going to different cities and venues and pass out flyers and record promo videos in these venues when the artist’s new song was being played. And then one day this program director was retiring from FM radio and going into digital radio and asked me and my brother DJ Blackice to be the focus of this Friday Night Internet Radio show which became Friday Night Lights.
From there we grew and relocated to the West Coast and eventually became a 24/7 streaming digital radio station and partners with a few clubs, venues and concert promoters.
2020 came and we were in quarantine like many others so we launched a weekly music mixer showcase on Youtube and that was the birth of Fresh Zone Tv Series, Inc. From there we moved to Twitch and became official Partners and we now are one of the top Twitch accounts for showcasing the best new music and everything within the hip-hop culture. We also launched a few new shows and podcast also.
During this whole Youtube & Twitch journey my own music begin to catch fire and my fanbase grew which has led me to brand sponsorships and label deals. My new project Dreamers 9 is set to release September 15th.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
I think the support is already there but I think most up and coming creatives artists tend to not go where the support is or maybe they are not fully aware.
I tell creatives and artists you really want to work on creating your own audience first. That’s what bigger brands and labels are looking for, they want you to already have some type of artist development.
So start a stream or podcast or go on your social media and go LIVE and upload consistent content and once you build a small audience then network out with other platforms.
Go to up and coming podcasts and do interviews, get your music on the weekly showcases like ours!
That’s how you expand your audience, invest in yourself, yes spend the money! Once you show society and the universe that you are all the way in, so many doors will start to open.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
