Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Stacy Vizcarra. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Stacy thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Do you manage your own social media?
Social media is definitely not something I grew up with. I feel I have a love hate relationship with it given my age, I feel most of us do. Managing your own social media is a job in itself that I have not mastered yet. I admire those younger generations who make it look so easy. The content and creativity they come up with is so inspiring. It’s not second nature to me to share my life on camera. I’ve always been the one behind the lens. The anxiety that comes with creating content is so real for me. I go months without posting and then get inspired and post for a few weeks get overwhelmed and then the cycle continues. Being a mother to two kids 15 and 9, I don’t have a lot of time to constantly be on social media. I think having that mental block of what could I possibly contribute that someone hasn’t already done is so hard! The more I take in and learn I am really fascinated by those that it is second nature to do and post and give such beautiful content.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I started my makeup career in 2003 for MAC in Southern California and stayed with them for 10 years before I went out in my own. I was also an artist for Tom Ford and Chanel. Going out on my own in 2013 was scary but it was time for me to focus on my family and also my freelance career as an artist. Specialized in bridal makeup. I also did all kinds of photoshoots and even got to work on the E network for season 3 “Total Bellas.” We moved to Kansas City in July of 2019. Starting my career all over again and making a name for myself here in Kansas City hasn’t been easy but I have met some amazing people here who have helped me get my name out there.
When relocating to Kansas City from California, I had to reinvent myself. I went from an area where my reputation in the industry was known, to starting from square one and developing a new brand and community. It wasn’t easy, but my love for what I do helps to continue to grow and challenge myself. My industry is a tough one, but the people who I have met and connections that I’ve made here have made it all worthwhile. Resilience – no matter where you are in life – is the most valuable tool you can have to keep moving forward.
I think what sets me apart is my natural glam look I give my girls. I want people to look like themselves just elevated. I love a satin skin with just the right amount of contour and highlight to accent you. Giving you a timeless look. Working with all ages, races and genders over my career I feel comfortable doing makeup for anyone. Being in the industry for almost 20 years (next year will be 20!) the professionalism I bring to the table and communication I have with my clients is always appreciated.
My style is always evolving and I’m always learning. I love to gather other makeup artists together and pick their brain to learn different techniques and prospective. If you stop learning you stop growing and nobody wants that. Especially in an artist environment.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
The most effective way is still referrals. I love working with people who know my work from past clients and even getting to work with the same clients for different occasions. They say the best compliment is referring and that is so true! Being part of someone’s happiest moments makes my job so rewarding. Weddings, pregnancy, family photography, and graduation to name a few. I’m always honored to be a small part in helping them feel their best on their happiest days. Instagram has been a big part of how I grow my business today. Being able to connect with so many people and having my work speak for itself has driven my business in a new city.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Makeup technique, color and approach is not one-size-fits all. I help my clients take a look that they love and tailor it for their skin tone, age, features and lifestyle. The best professionals – in any industry- earn their clients’ trust by creating an approach that brings out their personal best. I want all of my clients to walk away feeling their most beautiful selves.
