We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Stacy Todd a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Stacy, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s the best or worst investment you’ve made?
I spent years with cheap lenses for my camera. After consistent advice to save money and invest in quality lenses, I finally listened. The camera you have doesn’t necessarily matter but a quality lens makes all the difference in photography. It is a game changer. I wish I had listened in the beginning and not wasted my money on cheap lenses that were not productive in my growth.
Stacy, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a family photographer and have been for the past 16 years. After someone told me that I would not take as many pictures of my second child as I did my first, I set out to prove them wrong and developed my love for and passion for photography.
Family is extremely important to me so capturing families is so close to my heart.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson that I was always taught was posing your clients. It produced awkward and rigid images for me because I am awkward. When I learned about un-posing, it changed my photography for good.
I now set a general guideline of how to sit or stand but then give the client ways for them to interact. It gives so much for connection and story in the image.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I started photography trying to do it all. I was scheduling weddings, newborns, and everything in-between.
I knew after a few rounds of burn-out that I couldn’t do it all and I needed to narrow it down. Find my niche.
My photography has been enriched and I have grown so much after realizing that I don’t need to do it all!
