We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Stacy Salpietro Babb. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Stacy below.
Hi Stacy , thanks for joining us today. One of our favorite things to brainstorm about with friends who’ve built something entrepreneurial is what they would do differently if they were to start over today. Surely, there are things you’ve learned that would allow you to do it over faster, more efficiently. We’d love to hear how you would go about setting things up if you were starting over today, knowing everything that you already know.
When I was in college studying for a BA in Psychology, I stumbled upon Tarot and Witchcraft. It became my main focus; I can remember thinking that college classes were cutting into my time to learn Tarot and to read all of the books that I wanted to read. The semester that I started to read Tarot cards, my cumulative GPA for the semester was a 1.4.
If I could do things differently, I would have taken that as a sign to change the path that I was on. I did not know that the things that I was most interested in were something that I could create into a career for myself. It never even occurred to me. I went on to get my degree in Psychology, and I worked in the field for over 2 decades. I never stopped reading cards and following my interests in Witchcraft and crafts of all kinds. I worked a full time job, and came home to read cards for the people in my life.
I wish I had believed that my strange interests could become my vocation. I would have switched my major to Business Management, which is something that would have been Very helpful to owning a small business. I practiced my ‘hobbies’ for 15 years before I ever asked for payment, and I had to be convinced by my friends and clients. I could have started my self employed business many years earlier if I had paid attention to what was drawing my attention. Instead, I did something that I thought I was supposed to do, and assumed that my interests were nothing more than hobbies.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
When I first started my business, I spent a lot of time advertising. Now, most of my new clients come by word of mouth. People that I read cards for and teach refer their friends and family. I also work within a lovely community of professionals, and we all refer to each other. The goal is to connect people with the person that they need to work with most. I have found that it isn’t a competition; there are enough clients to go around. And I have never lost anything by sending a client to someone else. I have found that I gain the most by being cooperative.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
As a reader, my reputation has been created by the work that I do. I have to do accurate readings that answer the questions that people ask me to answer. I consider readings to be cooperative, and I work with the people that I read cards for. I have spent a lot of time building my skill, and I think that comes out in the readings that I do. I am also humble and practical about the work that I do. People are often surprised at how helpful a reading is to the real day to day life questions that they have. My reputation comes from my readings being accurate and helpful. I also maintain a sense of humor, and keep the experience fun and interesting.
As a teacher, my reputation comes from the time and energy that I put into teaching. I am respectful of my students and have the goal of helping them to find the path that works the best for them. I don’t make teaching about myself- I center it on my students. I consider the work that I do to be a service, and people can tell that it is something that I take very seriously.
