We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Stacy Roberts. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Stacy below.
Stacy, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Any thoughts around creating more inclusive workplaces?
When we look at many organizations, we can see there is still work to be done concerning cultivating inclusive work environments. My organization works with leaders and their teams to not only develop productive, peaceful, and profitable work environments, but to implement effective strategies to build inclusive workplaces.
Stacy, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have a background in payroll/ HR and have witnessed toxic workplaces in my career. These incidents bothered me so bad that I knew I had to do something to create the change I wanted to see. Over the years, I also developed a love for creating engaging workshops that participants looked forward to attending. SMR Leadership Solutions was started to provide personality testing, human skill workshops, and engaging trainings to assist people in understanding the role they play in creating a healthy work environment.
I genuinely care about people being treated right and work climates being effective. Many people know the technical side of their position, but do not do well in people management and relationship building. This is what drives me to continue to do my work.
I also write books to assist children in developing leadership skills at a young age and hopefully help them in become great future leaders.
In spite of everything, I want people to see God in me and know his love through my actions. I love building people and helping them accelerate in their personal and professional lives.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to learn to stop asking permission for certain things and to go for what I want. Many times, women (especially black women) are expected to be grateful for just being in the room. That is not enough. I have a voice. I have things to contribute. I am qualified to be in the room and I don’t have to tone down or apologize for being my authentic self.
I learned to walk in “You have not because you ask not.” I am going to go for everything God told me to, with no apologies.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I was in school for my doctorate and had my son as I was entering the dissertation phase. I had to adjust my entire life, learn to ask for help, and also become creative with time management. I was reminded that things are not always going to be easy, but we can do it and we don’t have to do life alone.
