We recently connected with Stacy Olsen and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Stacy thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Looking back, do you think you started your business at the right time? Do you wish you had started sooner or later?
I worked in my corporate career for over 25 years and for many years said “teaching yoga on the beach” would be my ‘retirement career’. Long story short: in 2018 I met and started working with a coach that shifted my timeline forward about 2 decades – in early 2019 I attended a retreat in Bali, sold my house, and left my corporate job to start my own yoga/coaching business. In February 2020, I hosted my first yoga retreat on the beaches of Lake Atitlan in Guatemala.
When I tell the story, it all feels so impulsive to me however it was anything but… All those dreams and adventures were things that I had never thought actually possible for me. Sure, I was teaching yoga, I was coaching students and training instructors – helping them to see that their next best step could be the step it takes to fulfill their purpose. It wasnt until I truly invested my time, money and energy into ME with coaching that I realized my true purpose.
Now… if I had to do it again, would I have waited to leave my career behind until my coaching business really gained traction? Or would I have started it sooner when I was had the stability of a house & full-time salary? I honestly cannot say that I would have. I truly believe that the Universe provides the exact timeline that I am destined for, and my instinct & intuition has never steered me wrong. I’m sure there were versions of my path that would have led me to the “same” place i am now, just on a variation of my journey. for now, I wouldnt change a thing of my past; I am grateful for each moment of my present; and I cannot wait to see which of my next best steps lead me to even more success and fulfillment of my purpose!!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?
When I began contemplating my ‘retirement career’ of teaching yoga on a beach, I joined an advanced yoga teacher training, and then started teaching yoga instructors how to teach. I loved the coaching and introspective aspects of my own training and wanted to pass that on to others as an empowering path to find & fulfill their purpose in life.
I help to solve the issue of not seeing options and choices. I believe EVERYTHING is a choice. there are no bounds to what you can do, where you can go, how you can feel…I believe that I set myself apart from others by owning my beliefs as my truth – and believe that anyone can get to that level of their own bravery and authenticity. sometimes we just need a hand to hold, a loving nudge, or a shove (full of care and compassion of course!) to take that first best step in the right direction.
My main coaching method is working together to discover what YOU want, and your big WHY – your absolute heart’s desires and wildest dreams; then we explore what kinds of resources you have available already to help get you there, or beyond. by resources I mean: life lessons, support systems, past experiences of success (or not), special gifts, interests & joys, habits & rituals. and then we start with one ‘laughably simple step’ to move you forward.
An example from a client: they wanted to lose weight. we uncovered their big WHY (which involved career success, improved relationship with their partner, and finding joy in hobbies) and started on a path of building a resource list including: daily walks, diet habits & observation, joining an accountability program, setting boundaries around time at work, at home, and alone. the laughably simple step? Stating one simple thing they were grateful for before daily weigh-in the result? reaching their goal weight months ahead of schedule; a thriving business (working just 30 hours a week); consistent quality time with loved ones; joyfulness on the golf course.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
The most recent lesson I have been learning/unlearning is this: no one is 100% right; no one is 100% wrong. of course, in theory, I have always known it to be true. now I LIVE it to the best of my ability.
The backstory: for many years I was highly involved in politics, very strongly & personally for a couple of candidates locally. I shouted from the rooftops my support and allegiance and demanded attention and support from anyone who would listen. I think back and shutter at how obnoxious I probably sounded/looked – every candidate is not for every body. especially given the recent climate about all topics – I have realized that “sides” only exist when you don’t take a minute to listen to someone who believes differently than you. “division” is only created when we will not allow passion & opinion to be discussed, rather than debated or just ignored. I realized that what I fought so passionately for and against, was the exact opposite of what others were fighting for and against, and that is ok. If everyone held identical beliefs, life would be pretty dull. by acknowledging that no one is 100% right or 100% wrong (self included) I was able to take a step towards a new perspective, and respect the fact that we all hold & express our integrity & values just as strongly as the next person.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Personal connection with former yoga students & teachers, word of mouth from current clients, being open to new opportunities to network in self-development groups, and sharing my own experiences with coaching with everyone I meet!
