We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Stacy Lee a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Stacy, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your creative career sooner or later?
Absolutely! Being an artist is such a journey and a process. I’ve always played around with as much artist media that I could get my hands on. However, I feel like I did waste time by putting off business and marketing classes. I should have been a Marketing Major in college! Hindsight is always 20/20, but I strongly recommend young artists to learn from my mistakes. Definitely get a degree in marketing and save yourself so much time and heartache! Be more serious about your artistic journey. View it as a business and not just a hobby. That will get you started!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Art has always been a source of joy for me. I’ve found myself sad during seasons of life when I wasn’t creating or taking the time to take it seriously. I eventually realized that I loved art, and it didn’t make sense for me not to pursue it seriously. I believe that color can radically transform the mood and atmosphere of a space. A dull and sad room can come bursting to life when you add colorful art to the walls! This is what I offer my collectors: a safe way to bring joy and happiness to living spaces. I love providing this service — it is a passion of mine!
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
When I was in college, I was trained to be an oil painter. What I didn’t know was that I was allergic to some of the chemicals used in the oil painting process. I actually got really sick and had to stop painting all together. For a long time I transitioned to digital art. This kept my creative juices flowing, but I really missed getting my hands dirty and being able to touch the canvas with my fingers. I didn’t give up on my desire to pursue art even though the first round of painting actually made me sick. I prayed about it for so long and eventually felt led to pursue acrylic painting. Acrylics are water-based and don’t require harsh chemicals during the painting or clean up process. It became a great solution after a long time of waiting and healing.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
I think that art and color should be more valued in our society–especially in the United States. I look at other cultures like India where color is such a huge part of their culture, and I hope we can learn from them! I think art should be considered a necessity and not an option. Want to solve the illegal drug abuse problem in the USA? One solution is art! Replace drugs with a passionate art hobby or career. I know it sounds crazy–but I swear it would work for many people!
