We were lucky to catch up with Stacy Heitman recently and have shared our conversation below.
Stacy, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
After I graduated from the Aveda Institute in Minneapolis, Minnesota I headed out west to Beverly Hills, California to start my advanced training program. I assisted three very busy colorists full time and did my advanced training program there as well.
When you assist three busy colorists you learn a lot. If I could give anyone starting in the industry any piece of advice I would tell them to learn from everyone, don’t rush moving into the next phase. Learn as much as you can, from as many people as you can. You’ll be amazed how much you learn in a few months or years and it will stay with you forever.
Never. Stop. Learning. There’s so many talented stylists/colorists out there that there’s always something new to learn. That’s the best part of this industry.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I graduated from the Aveda Institute in Minneapolis, Minnesota where I discovered my passion for color. I began my professional career as an assistant at Planet Salon in Beverly Hills, California.
I previously worked at Warren Tricomi’s Los Angeles salon as a senior colorist and educator for 6 years and I have worked the last 8 years at Sally Hershberger Los Angeles.
In 2021 my husband and I relocated to Denver. I now work at Isla Salon in Denver and maintain my clientele in Los Angeles. Starting over can be challenging but I have really enjoyed slowing things down a bit, meeting new clients and perfecting my craft even more.
My precision in foils, balayage, and color corrections set me apart from the rest. I remain on the cutting edge by continuing my education, applying new techniques, and challenging myself on a daily basis. I take great pride in making my clients feel sexy, confident and current.
My client list includes Robin Wright, Gwen Stefani, Gina Rodriguez, Courtney Love, Dylann Penn and Tiesto to name a few.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I love making people feel their absolute best. Watching your client walk out the door with a smile on their face and having them be so happy about their hair brings me so much joy. It is also a huge compliment when a client gives you a little shout out by taking a selfie, or tagging you in a photo.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My main goal is to always work around creative, energetic, talented people. When you work with other hard working talented stylists it makes you want to work just as hard.
