We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Stacy Feinman and Megan Harris.. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Stacy and Megan below.
Hi Stacy and Megan, thanks for joining us today. What was the most important lesson/experience you had in a job that has helped you as a business owner?
We met at a public relations agency in Miami when we were both working for clients in the consumer technology industry. During this time we gained so much valuable information from using the latest databases and software, to writing pitches and interacting with clients and later, when we put in our resignation and told our boss that we were striking out on our own, receiving incredibly valuable information on how to run a business and the steps we needed to take. It’s important to always remember that no matter where you are working or the project you are tasked to do, there are always learnings to take from it. Everything is a stepping stone to get you to the next place in your professional career.
Stacy and Megan, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
The Tropical Agency is a boutique public relations firm with a focus on the Consumer-Packaged Goods (CPG) category. Our clients include food + spirits, cosmetics + beauty, CBD, pet supplements and household products. Whether a brand is officially launching to the public, or an established brand is looking to announce a new SKU, our combination of creative storytelling, targeted media placements and strategic affiliate partnerships will position brands directly in front of their ideal audience.
Have you ever had to pivot?
We started The Tropical Agency six months prior to the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, and a majority of our clients at the time had to shutdown immediately. We went from having a full client load to two clients. This gave us the opportunity to think about what we wanted to achieve with our agency and the kinds of partners we wanted to work with. We networked and hustled, taking on any projects or clients we thought we could really add value to – which led us to working with startups in the CPG space. Within a few months, we were back to full time capacity, and working with some really exciting, innovative brands. The best part was because everything was happening digitally, we were able to work with clients as far away as Hawaii thanks to the power of Zoom. The lesson we learned is you are always going to be faced with challenges when starting a company – maybe even have to completely start over like we did – but how you utilize the time to rebuild and what you do with it can set the tone for the future of your business.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
We are fortunate now, nearly three years into owning our own agency, that a majority of our clients are through referrals from other clients we’ve worked with, or currently do. To us, this is the greatest compliment in the world, and a validation that our hard work is paying off for our clients. We pride ourselves on doing whatever it takes for our clients to get results – because their success is our success. It’s important to find different ways to add value and be okay with knowing that if something isn’t working, you can pivot and try a different tactic.
