Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Stacy Burk. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Stacy, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
When my wife and I moved to Sedona to become photographers, it looked impossible because there was so much competition. It was also very hard to make a living because Sedona is mostly a retirement community and there is no industry there. We left everything behind and used all our savings to move. We both worked 3 or 4 jobs for the first 3 years in order to survive. We took on free clients in order to get pictures. But when people seen our work, then our business started growing and people were sharing our work and the spreading the word. Withing a couple of years, we were so busy we were having to turn new clients away because of how many people were seeking our unique take on photography for their elopements, weddings, adventures or portraits.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I never thought about becoming a photographer. It was when I was pursuing Country Music in Nashville that I discovered photography. I was needing to promote my music, so I was paying the best photographers, (the ones that photograph all the celebrities) to take my pictures. It was then that I fell in love with photography. I learned that I had an eye for it. The music industry was so hard to break into at the time, so I started to pursue photography. I learned from some of the best, so when I moved to Sedona, I was surprised to see that most of the photographers were only natural light photographers. Sedona is known for it’s vivid colorful sunsets and rocks. But it’s impossible to capture clients in the beautiful colors of Sedona without professional off camera lighting. That’s what really set my photography apart from everyone else. Natural light photographers have to expose for the client, and in doing so washes out the colorful Sedona background. But we use professional off camera lighting that allows us to control the light which gives our pictures the vibrant original colors Sedona is known for.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I’ve always believed in giving people more than what they paid for. I look at my service as a ministry for creating special once in a lifetime memories for couples and families. I never look at the next client as just a number or think about the money. I want my work to always be fun and bring inspiration and new experiences for my clients. I always go above and beyond to make sure my clients are happy. That means, I’m always using the best and latest equipment, editing software and mastering my craft and creativity. I’ve been a guide for many years in the Southwest, which has helped tremendously in giving my clients unique background settings that’s hard to find. Through the years, word has spread of my services here in the Southwest and I’m grateful for all the Reviews I’ve gotten on Google which is currently almost at 300 and growing.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Instagram and Facebook has been a huge source for clients all over the country seeking my photography skills.
