We recently connected with Stacey Lyon and have shared our conversation below.
Stacey, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s start with a story that highlights an important way in which your brand diverges from the industry standard.
Much like interacting with a used car salesperson, working with a contractor can bring out negative feelings in people. The fear of the unknown, the what-if scenarios, poor communication and of course the dreaded invoice that is always much higher than expected.
At Beach Nest Interiors, we decided to approach the contracting process completely different than our competitors. We want you to set the budget and to be in complete control of your dollars. Whatever you decide is what goes. How is this possible, you may ask. We work backwards from the goal. We start off by making a list of everything that you hope to accomplish on your project and then prioritize the list considering what is a need versus a want. A wouldn’t this be cool to have list and a I could wait on these if I had to list.
From there, we go to work researching materials and gathering estimates from laborers. We use our trade discounts and buying power to negotiate discounted rates and then create a plan to squeeze in as many needs and wants as possible based on your budget. Then we can discuss the items that didn’t make the list and decide if you want to increase the budget or we can create a phase 2 plan for a time down the road when it’s financially comfortable for you to tackle those to do’s.
Most importantly, we treat every client’s home as if it were our own. If I would not want it or do it in my family home then I will not do it in yours. Your home is not just another construction site to us, it is a place where memories will be made and legacies will be built. We aren’t done until you are happy!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Stacey Lyon, Owner & CEO of Beach Nest Interiors, has had a passion for design and for creating special spaces that evoke the feeling of home since she was a child rearranging the furnishings in the custom dollhouse that her Nana kept for her at her house. Having spent over 20 years in the building industry specializing in kitchen and bath goods, she loved following design trends and working with architects and interior designers to curate unique spaces in the hospitality and multi-family channels. These luxurious designs brought inspiration that she parlayed into her own home, making high end design approachable and functional. Stacey would love to do the same for you.
Stacey grew up in the Annapolis, Maryland area which greatly inspired her modern, coastal design style. She spent her childhood sailing, crabbing and enjoying all that the waters along the Chesapeake Bay have to offer. She believes that each home should tell the story of you through collected treasures from the past combined with the modern, clean lines of today. Reach out and let her create a perfectly curated nest for you. After all, home is where your story begins…
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I believe that it is never too late to start over so at the age of 50, I started a new business in January and then another one in March.
Let’s back up a little bit first… my family business was a manufacturer’s representative agency in the plumbing industry, of which I would become the 4th generation to operate. Some of my earliest memories are making sales calls with my Dad to wholesale supply houses, collating product binders in the office and his trunk always being full of faucet parts and samples. I never dreamed of growing up to sell toilets for a living, but that is exactly what happened. I was a young woman in an industry full of men who thought I didn’t belong. It took time, a long time, to prove myself and to earn their trust and acceptance, but eventually I did. This is where I learned about grit and grace.
I thought I would work in the family business until I retired, however I had many complications when pregnant with my first child so ultimately we sold the business. Once my child reached school age, I went back to work in the industry that I came to love so much and went to work for several top plumbing product manufacturers. One week after purchasing a new home in Myrtle Beach, the international company I worked for underwent a corporate reorganization which would have required me to relocate to keep my job. This is when I decided to follow my dream of owning a business that I built from scratch. So in January 2021, I opened Beach Nest Interiors.
I was able to take this leap of faith because it was a calculated leap. My father raised me to believe that the three most important things in business are relationships, relationships, relationships and that I knew I could handle. Over my career, I have been able to parlay “talks at inappropriate times” on every report card I ever had into the learned skill of relationship building. On top of that, I had earned an MBA which taught me the nuts and bolts of operating a profitable business. Leading Beach Nest is one of the things I am most proud of and it is my hope that one day I will be able to turn it into a full circle moment by employing my son who is in college for engineering and my daughter who is in school for architecture thus creating another family business legacy.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
As I mentioned earlier, relationship building has always been and continues to be the most effective strategy for me in winning new clients.
First, let me share that I have a servants heart and love to give back to my community. It is a huge part of who I am and I have built a reputation for giving back and connecting others. I serve on many nonprofit Boards and volunteer as an ambassador for our local Chamber of Commerce.
I believe you get out of life what you put into it and business is no different. I network, volunteer and attend CEU classes several times each week. I am visible in my community and can work a room like no other. I ask questions that encourage people to share stories and get to the root of who they are and then remember the next time I see them. I make an effort to go talk to the person standing alone in the back of the room and to sit at the table with one person. I am always a friendly face in a room and the one who seeks out others to help them feel comfortable. There is always room for one more at my table and I live that philosophy.
So how does this translate into sales? People refer me because they know that I will take great care of their friend/family/colleague/etc. My integrity is very important to me and I do what I say I am going to do. Word of mouth has been so huge for my business that I have not had to spend money on marketing. Thank you to those who have tagged me on Facebook or who have been kind enough to share my name. You have helped support my family and I am so grateful for that.
