Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Stacey Doyle. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Stacey, appreciate you joining us today. Risk taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
A recent risk I took was packing all of my belongings, and my business, and moving from Rhode Island to California in 2019. I didn’t really have any solid connections in the Sacramento or Bay Area, however, there was a pull to go so my partner and I did it. We drove cross-country and enjoyed exploring for a few months and then landed in East Sacramento.
The pandemic hit soon after so there was certainly a huge fear that this risk we just took might not pay off.
Especially since I was only beginning to network and get my name out there.
Thankfully there is a strong social media network in Sac, as well as a really strong community here, so I was able to connect with other small businesses during that time. Once things began to open up and we were able to conduct business again, the socializing I did online during the shut downs paid off.
Since then, I’ve been building more solid relationships with locals in need of scroll-stopping visual content.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I am a photographer that currently specializes in creating content for small & large businesses, who are looking to invest in someone to take the busy work of content creation off their plates. I’m here to relieve them of the stress of having to figure out one more thing. Trying to come up with the content idea and then execute them is truly a large job. I know a ton of people want to attempt to DIY that portion of their business. And in the beginning, I think that might be wise for some. But for those who are looking to grow and scale their businesses, I’m there to step in and take that heavy work off their shoulders.
Whether it’s product photos, headshots, or storytelling images/videos to show who they are and what they are about, I am there to help create scroll-stopping content for them so they feel confident they have a solid visual voice to share with their audience.
My business has been creating for 21 years and it is an ever-evolving business, much like the creative world itself.
I’m here to help businesses crystalize their online visual voice to help to be noticed by their ideal clients.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
When I first started in my photography business, I was involved in the wedding world. It was busy and very demanding. I photographed hundreds of weddings since 2002. I loved being part of such an intimate story and documenting the reality of their days. The emotions and true moments are what drove me and the majority of my clients. However when Pinterest first burst onto the scene, suddenly a ton of couples wanted to re-create staged moments they saw on the app. And while I think that is very fun and you should do what you want to (it’s your wedding, do it your way!) – the unfortunate thing I started to notice was people were doing the same thing as the last (very cookie cutter) because the potential to be showcased on bridal blogs was a big deal. Or get published in a wedding magazine. And while I believe that’s an awesome thing if it happens for a genuine reason, I noticed that some couples only cared about styling their wedding, to the point of stressing out that if it wasn’t perfect and they didn’t get published, then what was the point?
And the documentation of the real moments started to get lost or left behind completely.
That’s when I decided to pivot away from weddings, and start to work in headshots. This lead me into the world of businesses and small businesses that didn’t have the huge marketing budgets that some corporations do. Yet they had stories to tell, and their story was just as worthy of being told as Cocoa-Cola or Nike.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Honestly, word of mouth has been and is currently the best way to create great business relationships. Since coming to CA and beginning to work here, my clients have been extremely wonderful with sharing my name in a crowded room. And I am so very thankful for that! Knowing that someone not only truly enjoys working with you and the work you created for them but also enough to spread your name around, means so much to me. It’s a very humbling moment to pull back and see the clients who had kindly shared my name with others.
