Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Stacey Allen. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Stacey, appreciate you joining us today. Taking care of customers isn’t just good business – it is often one of the main reasons folks went into business in the first place. So, we’d love to get a conversation going around how to best help clients feel appreciated – maybe you can share something you’ve done or seen someone do that’s been really effective at helping a customer feel valued?
At Stacey’s Sweets, we show our appreciation to customers by going the extra mile. We gift a free cake for any special occasion, ensuring our customers feel celebrated and valued. Additionally, we include free cupcakes with orders for our loyal customers, as a heartfelt thank-you for their continued support. These gestures have created unforgettable moments of joy and surprise, leaving customers feeling cherished and deeply appreciated. It’s been amazing to see how small acts of kindness can build lasting connections and smiles.
Stacey, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Meet Stacey: The Passionate Baker Behind Stacey’s Sweets
Hello! My name is Stacey, and I’m a proud home-based baker and treatmaker from Memphis, TN. Baking has been a passion of mine since I graduated from high school in 2010, and over the years, what started as a hobby has blossomed into a fulfilling business venture.
Balancing my 9-to-5 job alongside running my home-based business has been no easy feat. At one point, I was juggling work, school, and my business all at once—a challenge that taught me the importance of prioritizing. In 2020, I made the tough but rewarding decision to leave my job to focus fully on my business and complete my degree. This shift paid off when I graduated from the University of Memphis in 2021 with a degree in Hospitality and Management and a minor in Culinary Arts.
2020 marked a turning point for me, as I dedicated myself to building Stacey’s Sweets. While I’ve made great strides, I’m still learning the ins and outs of managing a business. Each day brings new lessons and opportunities for growth, and I’m excited to continue this journey, sharing my love for baking with the Memphis community and beyond.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
The best source have definitely been word of mouth or my customers even my classmates and family members have referred new people to me. Also social media like Facebook, instagram, and TikTok have been a great source. Another one is being a vender at a local pop-up shop.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Understanding Support in Business: A Lesson in Growth
One of the most important lessons I’ve learned as a business owner is that not everyone will support you. When starting out, it’s easy to assume that family and friends will be your biggest cheerleaders. However, that’s not always the case, and I had to shift my mindset to embrace a broader perspective.
I realized that my business is bigger than just my immediate circle. Instead of taking it personally when loved ones chose to support others or opted for larger, more established companies, I began to see it as part of the journey. For example, some may choose a $20 cake from a chain bakery over my handcrafted $80 cake, but that doesn’t diminish the value of my work.
This shift in perspective helped me focus on building a loyal customer base beyond my inner circle and refining my craft to appeal to a wider audience. It’s a reminder that success is about persistence, growth, and finding those who truly appreciate the quality and uniqueness of what you offer.
