We recently connected with Stability X and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Stability, thanks for joining us today. One of the toughest things about progressing in your creative career is that there are almost always unexpected problems that come up – problems that you often can’t read about in advance, can’t prepare for, etc. Have you had such and experience and if so, can you tell us the story of one of those unexpected problems you’ve encountered?
When being discharged early from a 9 year career in the U.S. Army due to issues related to work based disabilities (traumatic brain injuries from jumping out of military aircraft as a paratrooper ) as a single mother my safety net vanished. Collecting $500 a month in disability from the Veteran Affairs left me and my daughter homeless and with a reposed car. This gave my ex husband credibility to walk into Family Court and Petition for custody of our daughter after I had been Primary care giver for the last 6 out of 8 years. Once losing custody in August of 2021 I begin using Art full time to voice my pain and frustrations but to also be a form of visual therapy for me.
Stability, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is now Stability X formerly legally known by birth name as Nneka Brown. I am a U.S. Military Disabled Veteran. During the height of my career I spent time as a Paratrooper in the the 82nd Airborne Division jumping out of Airplanes, while serving as a Human Resources Specialist for the daily accountability of over 30,000 soldiers. I was apart of only 4% U.S. Military identifying women with this specific skill of being a paratrooper.
Just 43 days after leaving a nine year career in the U.S. Army I launched a online stationery manufacturing company Innovative Supplies Worldwide, Inc. selling over 8,000 notebooks in the first 24 hours.
Featured on Entrepreneur Elevator Pitch, partnering with A List celebrity Usher and his non profit Usher’s New Look for custom notebooks. I have received the class of 2018 40 under 40 leader award in the Gifts + Stationery Industry as well as being presented with the 2017 Georgia Launching Opportunities By Exporting award from Former Governor of Georgia Nathan Deal for exporting products outside of the U.S.A.
I was selected as 2020 Finalist for the Tulsa, Oklahoma Tulsa Remote program. Currently I have been accepted into ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena, CA to pursue a degree in Fine Art.
The main thing I would like for clients, followers and fans to know about me is that I do not let societal circumstances take me off my path. My disabilities do not stop me from being a mother, my disabilities do not stop me from having a valuable voice in society and I am not invisible because I earn below the federal poverty line at this moment in time. I have optimistic thoughts and have creative visionary thoughts for a better education system.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
I think non-creatives like convenience. I enjoy convenience but I also see how convenience stunts growth. I enjoy being a creative because when I take away convenience for the sake of taking it away I am able to self hack my way into episodes of growth and creativity. I will give an example of living full time on converted school bus to lower my personal carbon footprint. I was met with some very “convenient” remarks by a lettered agency that works as a city employee in Lynchburg, Virginia of “Why don’t you just get a house.” My only response was “This has been my dream since high school.” I should have given further context about my carbon neutral goals but I knew based off the way the question was asked they did not come to hear that answer. Many non creatives want to see others caught into convenience like them. Do not fall for that. Step into what it is you want and GO FOR IT, BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I advertised on the Instagram account called @TheShaderoom . At the time in 2016 they had 9 million followers they have since nearly tripled their follower count to almost 27 million I believe . I am a firm believer in “Go Big or Go Home.” Let the world see what you have to offer them. Do not be shy, bet on yourself and learn as you go. Do not get stuck in analysis paralysis because once stuck its hard to move from that spot. Flesh out the details, ask a few questions to trust worthy sources and then commit to getting the project done on the social media platform of your choice.
