We caught up with the brilliant and insightful St. Wallace a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
St., thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
My parents showed me the price of getting what you want, and that what you desire takes sacrifice. I grew up with two immigrant parents, they left their Home country , Dominica, and came to the US. To move us to Florida, my sister, and I lived in Dominica for 3 years just so they could save money.
I watched my father work 7 days a week when we first came to Florida. I can’t say I fully remember, but I remember people thinking he wasn’t around. A common stereotype, and issue for people that look like me, but that wasn’t my story. In reality; my parents gave everything. I was waiting on campus while my mom finished her degree. All this work, and they still made time for me. Years later they do what they want, and they’ll retire without a care in the world . I am who I am, and I’ll break my back to achieve because I watched them. None of this was luck. I’m a product of literal blood, sweat, and tears. I’m burdened with the dream of making their sacrifice worth it.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Music has always been with me. I had low self esteem, and I want to speak to people like that in my music. I write, produce, and record music. I love trying new genres, and getting out my emotions. The biggest thing I want it to be true to myself, and always strive for higher. I have a project and 5 eps I release last year. My catalogue is consistent and very versatile, but most of all it is true to me.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I was kicked out of my house at 19. I’d dropped out of a degree I didn’t like and my family couldn’t accept it. This was around the time covid started. I moved cities and spent my days trying to succeed with my music. I lost my girlfriend at the time, and several friends. I had barely any money, and that inspired my first album “By Any Means” I got it tattooed on my arm, and promised myself I’d give everything to what I believe in.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
It’s not hard to repost someone’s art, and Donate if you have the money. People only want to buy into something that’s trendy, and don’t want to help on the way up. Also be real with your artist friends. We need to hear the good AND bad that we do. Make sure your criticism is respectful.
