Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Ssu-Ya Hsiung. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Ssu-ya thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
During my journey in metal craft, I often found that the intricate and repetitive processes gradually wore away my initial passion for creation. This experience led me to question myself — Why do I create? What is the true purpose of my art?
These questions became a turning point, guiding me from the framework of traditional craftsmanship toward the practice of performance art, where I could confront and explore my inner emotions more directly. Each act of creation became both a path of self-awareness and a confrontation with my own fear and vulnerability.
Using my body as the medium, I inserted acupuncture needles into my arm, each tipped with a piece of tissue paper shaped like a feather — a symbol of transformation. The act embodies both pain and desire: in the moment of real, piercing sensation, I await the metamorphosis, the emergence of wings — to transcend fear, and to be reborn into freedom and strength.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
As I mentioned in the previous question, my exploration of performance art has allowed me to understand myself more deeply and to clarify my position as an artist. I realized that what truly fulfills me is the process of turning imagination into tangible form — the quiet joy of transforming a sketch into something real. Thus, I have returned to metal craft as my primary medium, carrying with me the introspection that performance art once awakened. Now, I seek to fuse that inner awareness with my craftsmanship, allowing creativity to take shape in both material and spirit.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist or creative is the ongoing process of self-discovery. Each creation begins with the most genuine thoughts and emotions within me, and through transforming them into visual or material form, I give shape to feelings that words cannot fully express.
Throughout this process, I learn to reexamine the way I think, feel, and perceive beauty. It allows me to understand who I am and why I create. To me, art is not only a means of expression but also a continuous journey of dialogue, exploration, and personal growth.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I aim to convey my personal sense of aesthetics and creative individuality through my work, providing people with a richer and more diverse visual experience. For me, jewelry is not merely an ornament, but something that can bring joy, confidence, and a gentle strength into everyday life.
I believe that the true value of art lies not only in its form or beauty, but in its ability to evoke emotion and create resonance. Through my creations, I hope to build a subtle yet meaningful connection between people, themselves, and the world around them.
