We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Square B Kevo a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Square B, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What sort of legacy are you hoping to build. What do you think people will say about you after you are gone, what do you hope to be remembered for?
When it’s all said and done, I want to be one of the ones mentioned in “Houston’s history” when it comes to videography. Obviously I want to leave my mark around the world, but for sure here in Houston. So I want my legacy to be known for the work. When you speak about the visual arts of our hip hop scene, I want to be mentioned as far as bringing the visuals to life.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I started out with another brand helping build their studio, which ended up turning into me doing the scheduling the end of 2016. When artist would come to the studio they would ask if we shoot music videos, at the time we didnt. That ended up pushing me towards the camera. After almost 2 years, the owner and I had different wants for ourselves so I started planning to start my own business. At the end of 2018 I started Square Business Media, a video production company that takes on all sorts of projects from graphic design to full video productions. I think what separates us from other brands is, we try to bring out the feeling in the project. I like to connect with the viewer through our visuals that will bring out the real genuine emotion. Thats what im most proud of, helping the client figure out what they are trying to express with the project they bring to us. I want our followers and future followers to understand we love what we do and want to make it an experience when they choose us for their next project.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Well we can start with our name “Square Business Media”. The phrase “square business” was an old slang word I think that started in the 70’s. I think at first when they used to say it, it meant to them “understand”. But as the phrase traveled around the states, in Texas we turned the phrase “square business” into good business. People would say oh he’s square business when it comes to cutting hair, meaning he’s good at what he does. Or yes you should do business with him he’s square business, as in he does good business. So when I came up with it, I always received good feed back from the work I’ve done over the years so I felt like I was the definition of square business. But when I would ask close friends or family members they all said the same thing. What does that mean? It sounds to ghetto. It discouraged me to the point I started coming up with new names. But I always felt like the name fit me the most. It took for one person to help give me the confidence to just go with it and not worry about what anybody else said. Almost 5 years later square business media is on its way to being a well know video production business here in Houston.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Open mics. I shoot a lot of music videos, and who needs music videos? Artist, so where do you find new artist? I try and stay in the loop of all the open mics, live performances, festivals and any where there will be a lard amount of new faces. They say business cards are old and out of style but I think they way they are presented is the issue. When im out meeting new artist, if I dont get their social medias right then and there, I give them my business card/flyer. The little old business card won’t do it. So put 2 business cards together, so almost 3 in by 4 in flyer. The artist might forget about you, but at the end of the day when they get home and take everything out of their pockets, they’ll see this big ol business card/flyer. Thats the best way I get new clients.
