We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Spitfire Sparks. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Spitfire below.
Spitfire, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
Today I have chosen to speak on learning the craft, as it is such an important aspect of being an independent artist. In traditional days, you would just focus on creating music, hope to get signed and then at that point someone else would handle almost every other aspect for you for a cut. Being completely independent means EVERY responsibility is on me. The production, writing, recording, mixing, artwork, marketing, show booking, videography, merch, the list is almost never-ending.
First and foremost, I believe it is essential to understand your strengths and weaknesses. Find the things that are the hardest for you to do (or that you like to do the least) and focus funding to outsourcing on those. Many other things may seem easy, but you just don’t know how to do it. There’s ALOT of this. There is no cheat code for learning, there is no cheat code for time. You obviously can set your own pace for learning, but there will always be new skills to learn and old ones to improve.
You will face setbacks. You will have moments where it feels insurmountable… but its not, its just the feeling. When you overcome that and accomplish things you never thought imaginable, it fuels you to learn more, and elevate higher.

Spitfire, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a drummer/rapper/producer/avid music lover whose only goal is to do what I love and make a positive impact in doing so. I have been around music my whole life, and find it to be one of the only universal languages in the world. I aim to harness that to put myself in a position to further help people around me and around the world.
My care and dedication set me apart because I physically cannot half ass anything when it comes to something with my name on it. I am big on reputation, and my brain just won’t allow me to put something out if I don’t stand behind it fully. This leads me to putting hefty amounts of time and effort into everything I do.
I am very proud of overcoming all the obstacles along the way, but above all I’m proud of myself for seeing it through. The last five years have been awesome, but they have not at all been easy, and even still quitting would probably be the easier and less stressful option, but at this point it’s erased from my mind, and I’m very proud of myself for reaching that point.

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
This one is always tricky, as of course there are many tiers to what you can do to support… however the easiest thing I tell people is: just spreading the word. Advertising is costly, streams pay very minimally, and people don’t often buy music these days. For the whopping cost of free ninety-nine, you can share your friend or favorite artists posts, or show their music to your friends, thus providing free advertising help to that artist. A little bit can go a long way.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Hands down the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is that I took the leap to chase a dream and did it. It may even be a stepping stone to something else, I have no idea what the future holds, but I do know that if I can harness fear and push myself to do what I actually want to do with my time, that eventually I will create the life and environment I desire.
