Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Spignotta Milam. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Spignotta, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
I wrote a poem and dedicated it to my Grandfather Dennis Williamson. The poem was titled:Foot Warmer. Back story my grandfather was born a:slave in:Denmark TN 2 years before slavery was abolished. His mother had been raped by the slave owner and he was a product of that rape.. As a baby they would bring him from the slave quarters at night and lay him across the feet of his father and his father’s wife at night in the winter time to keep their feet warm.
The poem was to let the world. know even as babies slaves, had jobs.
I wanted the world to know how horrible slavery was first hand. How a baby could not be nursed during the night or cuddled in their mother’s arms because my grand father had to go to work .

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I was 18 months old when I ate chips of lead paint off the floor that caused me to have grand mal seizures non stop.
My mom rushed me to the hospital. I was diagnosed with severe lead poisoning and given just days to live.
After several hours of continous seizures they opted to take out as much tainted blood that they could and give a full body blood transfusion. It worked . I had a seizures once every 6 weeks while taking seizures meds for next 14 years. Then new medication and lots of prayers they just stopped. I was bullied told I would have to live with family the rest of my life and could never marry due to seizure disorder.
I graduated with my bachelor’s degree and masters degree in social work and have had thriving career as a LCSW therapist.
I have 3 grown productive children and live independently.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Through counseling and Intuitive Poetry my mission is to heal the brokenness of emotional trauma.
I want people of diverse backgrounds who have come to America to know that through:hard:work, mental health resources and prayer they can overcome anything. That includes overcoming language and culture . barriers.Love , kindness and determination can conquer hate.
