We were lucky to catch up with Spenser Olson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Spenser, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
It has been mentioned many times before, but I was teaching myself how to play piano at age 3. It did not take long to come to the conclusion and realize that music is what I wanted to do with my life. Throughout my grade school years there were times where I contemplated taking different paths but ultimately I knew music was the career for me.
Spenser, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Sure. I made my way into the industry in 2013, I was 11 years old. I began working with a local vocal coach, talent agent, and recording studio in Dallas TX, where I was born and was living at the time. I was presented an opportunity to go to NYC for a songwriting & talent competition. Only problem I hadn’t released an original track of my own.
We got to work writing and recording my first original single “Golden World” and my cover song, needed for the completion, of “Not Over You” by Gavin Degraw. I placed top 5 at the competition despite being the only minor aged contestant in the songwriting division. I was offered a few options from various managers and labels but all requiring things from me I wasn’t willing to give up – Ultimately I pivoted
The single, Golden World, was my first product to release that started to get traction. I then started YouNow live streaming and posting YouTube covers. This was also all around the time when “Vine” was becoming the next big social media platform.
From there 3 years later I finished and released my first full album “Your Love for Us”. I was able to travel the country performing those songs, mostly at various local churches. I was also involved leading worship at my church at the time, Prestonwood Baptist, with 45,000 people in attendance weekly.
In the recent years I have released a couple new singles showcasing a new style and outlook on music. I also just recently announced the launch of my new record label project “Studio Sixteen Music Group” with a goal to discover artist and create music that inspires.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I think the ability to be an artist and as a creative it is rewarding to spend time creating something that can then have a huge impact on people, in ways you never could’ve imagined. When you have an idea and you work towards bringing it to life, I think we doubt how much impact and attention can be gained.
We’d love to hear your thoughts on NFTs. (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
NFTs are exciting for me. I think there is a general fear people have due to the unknown and the newness. I believe once the flashiness wears off, there are still very relevant and applicable uses for NFTs. I imagine concert & sporting passes, golf club memberships, even store rewards cards – sky is the limit
