We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Spencer Folmar a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Spencer, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
At Hard Faith we are “Telling Stories that Liberate” through cinematic visuals.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
“Spencer Folmar is an award winning producer, director, and writer. He has been making independent feature films for over 15 years. He is the founder of American Talent Management. His 2017 theatrical debut “Generational Sins” made worldwide news with his new Hard Faith™ genre. His films and entrepreneurial endeavors have been featured in Variety, New York Times, New York Post, Newsweek, LA Times, Deadline, Hollywood Reporter, and more. Spencer has written & directed 6 feature films and produced 11 feature films. Spencer’s life motto in art is “Telling Stories That Liberate”.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My statement of purpose is to Tell Stories That Liberate. I believe that great stories can save the world and can help even the most desperate of situations. I have always turned to great stories to be inspired, moved, changed, and sometimes even transformed. Liberation from fear, imprisonment, want, and even desire is possible.
The greatest stories ever told I believe can be best told with cinema, which to date is still the most compelling visual medium available to change the world.
I made my first movie when I was seventeen with high school friends. This was after I had made countless short films and experimental videos in the early stages of the internet. I quickly realized that I didn’t have to wait for someone to say “yes” to my dreams of becoming a filmmaker, but that I could create my own films as long as I had the willpower and a compelling story I wanted to tell. I have been fortunate to direct six feature films and produced eleven. That first movie I made was not great, in fact, I don’t even show my wife how terrible it was. But I do know that every film I make or help produce continues to improve and change as I grow with age and experience.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I was fortunate because some of my youngest memories I realized I wanted to give my life to making movies. However, it was in the seasons in my life that I did not pursue cinema that I was reinvigorated to return back to my first love.
I am a member of both the Directors Guild of America and The Producers Guild of America and I plan to win top prizes for the films I produce and help create. I also hope to liberate even one individual with a story I’ve been responsible to steward with a well told story.
