We recently connected with Spence Crosby and have shared our conversation below.
Spence, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
My craft and ultimate passion is Martial Arts. Learning martial arts was one of the greatest things that has ever happened to me. It taught me dedication, confidence and above all self discipline. I learned the art of combat early on from a great teacher known as Josh Villa. He took time to train and teach me the art of combat. From there I would participate in various martial arts tournaments to fight. I ended up taking 1st place in my three tournaments. From there, I fought one more time in which I placed 2nd this time around. After that, I decided to focus more on the details of the art of combat. I then began my self study where I would watch YouTube videos on how to improve my skill set. I studied deeply martial artist’s such as Ginger Ninja Trickster and Master Wu. I would work on different drills to improve my kicks, power, balance and overall coordination. The “self taught” method really propelled my martial arts competency.
What I would have done different in order to speed up the process would be to drill and keep drilling the basics. Build incredible balance and kick basic kick control. Mastering those first will serve to be a solid and strong foundation. Making the harder moves easier to learn. So drill the basics!!
The skills that I think are most essential is to master all of the basic kicks, Front kick, side kick, roundhouse kick, hook kick, back kick, etc. Mastering those basic and fundamental kicks will take your kicking game to a whole other level. Bruce Lee once said “I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times.” Practice those kicks over and over again and that will greatly improve your martial arts skill set.
Some obstacles that stood in the way along my journey were pretty much myself. Try not to overthink things as much. We all do to a degree, so try to minimize that and keep it simple. Don’t think you are too old to learn new skills. It doesn’t matter what age you are. As along as you remain open to learning new things and letting go of the people that are stuck in that fixed mindset, you will blossom like a flower in a healthy garden. My last obstacle that stood in the way was don’t rush the process. It’s natural for the flame from our burning desire to make us overly excited and rush the process. But take your time and enjoy the journey. Trust the process and remember every step no matter big or small is still step toward your goal.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I got into my discipline through watching anime and playing video games. I loved combat since I was young. Watching different anime characters fight and enjoying the thrill of working their martial arts skills really excited me. And just one day at 20 years old I decided to finally take that leap.
I provide different services such as personal training through which I can teach my martial arts background which is mainly Taekwondo, Kickboxing, and Boxing. I also have a YouTube channel in which I provide martial arts tutorials and workouts for people to follow along too.
I am most proud of my hard work and dedication I put into my martial arts craft. I learned martial arts at a fairly late age and that didn’t stop me. Nor should it stop you! As far as if you to learn more about my craft and journey. Then checkout my YouTube channel Building Physiques. I have many fun fitness and martial art workout videos for you guys to try. Teaching is what I love to do and I have plenty of videos/information for you guys to take in.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Inspiring, motivating and helping people of the world become the best versions of themselves, Nothing else warms my heart more than to receive direct messages from different people thanking me about how much I have helped them grow and be in a better place physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. That is the most rewarding gift I can ever receive.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My mission is to continue to inspire and motivate people around the world. I want the people who watch and listen to my videos to take something from it. Become the best version of yourself. Its okay to slip and fall down the line but it’s not okay to give up. Don’t ever give up on yourself, keep believing and remember a step is a step, no matter how big or small.
