We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Spectrum The Originator a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Spectrum, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
Growing up in Haiti, support for artistic professions was non-existent. I was conditioned to go to school, get a degree and start working like a slave until I die. I had three options; become a doctor, lawyer or engineer. I chose neither. After moving to the United States at the age of 12, I fell in love with Hip-Hop instrumentals, so I started producing in high school. After I graduated high school I decided to take myself seriously as a musician and started singing and rapping on my own beats. A couple of years later a playlist editor at Spotify added one of my songs to the official Spotify playlist. That’s when I knew I had a chance to make my dream of being a successful musician come true.

Spectrum, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
After years of studying the music industry and being involved in the management of a few artists, I was encouraged to start a record label. A lot of artists that I know struggle with having structure and discipline to execute their vision. That’s where I come in. I’m a very self-driven and disciplined individual. I taught myself videography so I can shoot my own music video. I learned the ins and outs of the music industry and have helped many artists navigate it and establish a strong brand for themselves.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
I’ve always said “friends won’t support you until strangers do.” If the people in your circles were actively sharing your work and talking to others about you, I think it would be easier for artists to grow a strong fanbase. But instead we have to rely on social proof from strangers supporting us before our own people show their support.

Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I wish I knew about investors. Anyone who’s looking to start a business knows that you need capital, the music business is no different. So I’m in the search of credible investors to help scale my record label to new heights. Contingency Entertainment signed 2 great talented artists, who are doing a great job at growing their fanbase, now we need more capital to expand and reach the masses. The quality and enticing music is there, I’m confident it’s only a matter of time before millions of people gravitate towards it.
