We recently connected with Spazz King and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Spazz, thanks for joining us today. I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being an artist or creative force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?
I would say I’m happy as who I am, because I am an artist, If I am creating or taking a step, I continue to be happy, while it does add joy to my life, I’m Not defined by the title. I don’t necessarily wonder what it’s like to have a regular job because I’ve had several of those, it doesn’t fulfill me, sometimes I do wonder what it would be like to explore different avenues outside of art, like but every time I do somehow my mind always goes back to creating.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I’m Spazz I’m an artist, I Paint, Tattoo, Refurbish furniture, and Nomadic YouTuber where I vlog my days on the road and other shenanigans. I’ve been creating since I learn motor skills, I took art in high school, where I learned about surrealism and fell down a rabbit hole, I studied a lot of art history and my favorite surrealists are Dali and Kahlo are my core inspirations, I love surrealism because not only does it allow you to see into the artists mind, it opens a different perceptions to the viewer. A lot of my art depicts women, with very exaggerated features, you’ll see a lot of long necks in my work, very eclectic beautiful faces in a morbid kinda way, and symbolism ,I get compared to Tim Burton a lot, except i paint black people too, I was introduced into the tattoo world soon after high school, I have plans with tattooing but currently isn’t my main focus. I took on refurbishing furniture because I thrift often and I like incorporating my art into as much as I can, also clothing, jackets and flannels, I love giving life to old and warn,
I’m most proud of my growth as a spiritual being, my growth as a human, and how my art has grown and evolved with me and how it affects others. I can say what makes my art stand out from others is it’s truly organic, it’s straight from my soul and spirit, literally my dreams on canvas, my pieces are all somehow connected and tells a story about my life. I can’t really say I’m too set apart from other artists, as the art does reflect the artist. We all have different stories to tell and different messages to convey.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
A book that impacted my life in the most tremendous extraordinary way is called E squared by Pam grout, it’s an experimental book on how to change your mindset into more positive thinking for more positive outcomes changing my reality and improving my creativity and lifestyle. She gives nine experiments to try, I’ve finished the book twice already and the experiments truly work. There’s a second book called E cubed, focusing on manifesting , it’s just as insightful. I suggest it to everyone
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I had to unlearn was and is reacting on emotion and letting it get the best of me. Unlearning anger and frustration as a reaction has really helped me in my personal and business relationships as well as with my art. I’m not too much of a people Tbh, my energy is very rare so I’m not for everyone and vice versa, but being aware of myself and my triggers helps tremendously. Also I’m Autistic and sometimes my emotions are hard to read, not only for others but for me as well and Im misunderstood sometimes, There was a time I had so many friends I was spreading myself so thin. I lost myself, I found myself imploding, and I was angry a lot of the time, I’m grateful to have come to a time in my life where it’s all be lifted from my spirit.
