We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Space Hug. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Space Hug below.
Space Hug, appreciate you joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
Space Hug started during the early days of COVID when the world felt disconnected, and we were newlyweds looking for ways to create something meaningful together. Our basement studio became a creative sanctuary where we began writing and producing songs as a team, pulling in some of our favorite musicians from Minnesota to collaborate.
What started as a passion project quickly grew into something bigger. We played live shows, released music videos, and built a strong following in the Twin Cities. When we moved to Hawaii, the change inspired a fresh wave of creativity. Through technology, we’ve kept working with our Minnesota bandmates while connecting with new collaborators.
These days, we focus on sharing our music online, embracing the way people discover music now. The most rewarding part has been hearing how our songs resonate with listeners around the world. It’s not just about creating music—it’s about sharing a piece of who we are and seeing that spark light up in others.
Awesome—so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourselves to our readers?
We’re Erik Newman and Adrianne Prettyman, the husband-and-wife duo behind Space Hug. Erik has been in the music scene for years, playing in signed bands like Limited Warranty and Holiday Ranch. He’s opened for Tina Turner, Tears for Fears, and Eddie Money and has experience in publishing and songwriting.
Adrianne has a background in vocal performance and got her start in New York, working for Sony Music and performing with various bands. We met through music, became close friends, and eventually started collaborating creatively.
During the pandemic, we got married and launched Space Hug, inspired by the idea of offering a “hug” during such isolating times. Since then, we’ve grown the project into a full band, working with incredibly talented musicians both in Minnesota and now remotely from Hawaii.
Our music is a true partnership—blending our skills and experiences into something unique. Thanks to modern tech, we’re able to keep collaborating with old bandmates and new friends, and we’re excited to see where this journey takes us next.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For us, it’s all about connection. If our music can make someone feel something—whether it’s joy, comfort, or even just a moment of reflection—that’s what makes it worthwhile. It’s not about how big the audience is; it’s about creating something that touches people in meaningful ways.
There’s something magical about collaborating as a couple, pouring our hearts into a song, and seeing how it resonates with others. Sharing that process and the joy it brings is incredibly rewarding, and it’s a gift we’re grateful to keep giving.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Supporting original music takes intention. Streaming is great for discovery, but it pays artists so little that it’s hard to sustain a career without other support. Live shows can also be tough because audiences often gravitate toward cover bands over original music.
The best way to foster creativity? Show up for local artists. Go to their shows, tip them generously, buy their merch, and spread the word. Supporting independent music isn’t just about the moment—you’re helping artists create stories that will resonate for years to come. Original art challenges, inspires, and connects us. Be part of that by championing the creatives in your community
