We were lucky to catch up with Sowmya Gadiraju recently and have shared our conversation below.
Sowmya, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
Bridal makeup is more than just foundation, lip sticks and tools we use…its more of making the bride look and feel beautiful inside and outside on her most important day. This reminds me of a situation…. We were in between a trial session when the bride told me that she had already gotten a trial done from two other artists. I was the third artist she’s getting a trial from. In that moment, a lot of questions were running through my mind, “Is she going to say no to me?”, “why did she turn down the other two artists?” and “can I even get her to like my makeup?” So, just to make sure I am doing what she likes, I started off asking her idea of makeup for her wedding day. She explained and I listened and then I showed her some sample looks. Together, we were able to create a look that she and her family liked. I believe what made the difference in this scenario was me listening to what this bride was looking for and then being able to bring her vision to life.
I believe a bridal makeup artist’s success comes from listening to a bride on what makes her feel beautiful on the best day of their lives and applying all our experience as a makeup artist for making it happen. When I look at a bride, I can almost immediately envision her with makeup being the best version of herself. I think that’s something that comes from experience.
I have been doing makeup for 6 years now and not to mention sometimes are super exciting and hectic to the extent that I had an opportunity to doll up 16 brides in a short span of 14 days. One thing for sure is that I love what I do and especially when I see a bride feeling beautiful, happy, and confident on her wedding day, my passion towards being a makeup artist grows 100 fold.
I’ve been trained by many reputable makeup artists. And I try to keep myself updated with the latest makeup trends in Instagram. Lately, waterproof makeup is something I’ve added to the list of services that I provide in addition to the HD and Airbrush.
I would describe my preferred makeup style as a fusion of both western and Indian traditional. Although I moved away from India at a young age, having grown up in a very traditional Indian family made me stay connected to the indian culture. And I feel lucky that by being an Indian bridal makeup artist, I get to stay close to my roots.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
