We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sowania Germain a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Sowania, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
As a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) and Perinatal Mental Health Certified (PMHC) professional, my mission is to support mothers navigating perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, especially those with a history of trauma. My passion for this work stems from my own journey as a mother of three, having experienced a traumatic birth and a high-risk pregnancy that led to both my newborn and me being hospitalized for months. I understand firsthand the emotional toll this takes on mothers and families, which is why I am committed to providing compassionate, trauma-informed care. In my practice, I also work with couples, helping them strengthen their relationships as they navigate the challenges of parenthood and healing together.
My mission is deeply personal—rooted in my own lived experience as a mother who faced a traumatic birth, a high-risk pregnancy, and the overwhelming emotions that come with having a baby in the NICU. I know what it feels like to be consumed by fear, uncertainty, and the weight of trying to hold it all together while facing immense physical and emotional challenges. The lack of understanding and support I encountered during that time made me realize how many mothers and families suffer in silence.
This is why I created my private practice—to be the support that I once needed. I want mothers to know they are not alone, that their feelings are valid, and that healing is possible. My work is not just about addressing perinatal mood and anxiety disorders but also about helping women process the trauma that often accompanies pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum experiences. I integrate trauma-informed care to help mothers and couples rebuild a sense of safety, connection, and hope. By working with both individuals and couples, I strive to strengthen family bonds, foster understanding, and ensure that no mother or family has to navigate this journey alone.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.

I specialize in supporting mothers who have experienced perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs) with a trauma-focused approach, as well as working with couples navigating the complexities of parenthood. My journey into this field is deeply personal—after experiencing a traumatic birth with my first child, a high-risk pregnancy, and an extended hospitalization for both my baby and me, I understood firsthand the emotional, psychological, and relational challenges that many mothers and families face. This experience ignited my passion for providing compassionate, specialized care to those struggling with similar challenges.

One of the things I’m most proud of is breaking the stigma surrounding maternal mental health, particularly in communities where these conversations are often overlooked. Through my work, I want mothers and couples to know they don’t have to suffer in silence—help is available, and healing is possible. Whether through individual therapy, couples counseling, or advocacy work, my mission is to ensure that every mother feels supported, every partner feels equipped, and every family has the resources they need to thrive.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
My reputation in the maternal mental health space has been built on a foundation of genuine relationships, specialized expertise, and a deep commitment to educating both clients and providers. As a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC-D) and Perinatal Mental Health Certified (PMHC) professional, I have dedicated my career to supporting mothers and couples navigating perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs) with a trauma-focused approach. What has truly set me apart is my ability to combine clinical expertise with lived experience, allowing me to connect with my clients on a deeper level.
Collaboration has been a key factor in establishing my credibility. I have built strong relationships with OB-GYNs, midwives, doulas, lactation consultants, and other perinatal providers, ensuring a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to care. By working alongside medical professionals, I help bridge the gap between mental health and maternal health, offering specialized insight into the emotional and psychological impact of pregnancy, birth, and postpartum recovery.
Additionally, my commitment to training and education has strengthened my reputation. I provide workshops and trainings for providers, equipping them with the knowledge and tools needed to identify, support, and refer mothers struggling with PMADs and trauma. This not only enhances the quality of care available to mothers but also reinforces my position as a trusted expert in the field.
Ultimately, my niche—focusing on trauma-informed perinatal mental health and couples therapy—has allowed me to stand out in a crowded field. I don’t take a one-size-fits-all approach; instead, I tailor my work to the unique experiences of each mother and family. Through my clinical work, advocacy, and education, I have built a reputation as a compassionate, knowledgeable, and trusted resource for both clients and professionals in the maternal mental health community.

Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
My business is built on the foundation of the Holy Spirit, God, and His principles, which guide my decisions, client care, and overall mission. Faith is at the core of everything I do, and I believe that true success comes from aligning my work with God’s purpose for my life.
In addition to biblical wisdom, books like *Rich Dad Poor Dad* by Robert Kiyosaki have significantly influenced my entrepreneurial thinking. This book reshaped my mindset around finances, ownership, and the importance of building long-term wealth—principles that I apply not only to my business but also to how I empower the mothers and families I work with. Just as I encourage clients to invest in their mental and emotional well-being, I also believe in investing in knowledge, growth, and financial literacy to create a lasting impact.
I am also inspired by resources that emphasize servant leadership, faith-driven business principles, and trauma-informed care. Books like *Business Secrets from the Bible* by Rabbi Daniel Lapin and *The Blessed Life* by Robert Morris reinforce my belief that prosperity is not just about wealth but about stewardship, generosity, and operating in alignment with God’s will. These perspectives have shaped how I manage my practice, build relationships, and serve my clients with integrity and purpose.
Ultimately, my business is not just about providing therapy—it’s about creating a space where healing, faith, and transformation intersect. Every decision I make, whether in client care, leadership, or entrepreneurship, is grounded in prayer, wisdom, and a commitment to serving others through God’s guidance.
