We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Soupless. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Soupless below.
Hi Soupless, thanks for joining us today. Do you wish you had started sooner?
I feel that the answer most would give to this question, and expect one to respond with, would be to begin sooner. Conversely, though, I feel as if there is no other way for this to have gone, or to continue to go, had I started sooner or later. I think of how it might’ve been had I started sooner, much more immature, and with a blurrier lens of the world, and I am frightened by the path I might’ve gone down, maybe doing things not for personal growth but for external approval. On the other hand, I see where some of the advantages of starting later could lie, but at the same time, my path and relationship with music led me exactly to what I’m doing now, so I can’t truly imagine the spot that I’d be starting later, and that also concerns me. In the scenario where I pursued another type of art, and gained similar perspectives to that which I have now, I could see where this late start would be advantageous, but then again I’ve never known another art form in which I have connected to more than with music. I started playing guitar in a time of great hardship and loss, where I really had no direction to look in life towards the middle of highschool, and solidified my passions for songwriting in the coming years, which led me to pursue music in college. Ultimately, this timing gave me the perfect opportunity to grow and experiment, finding what I like and where I fit, before entering college, and really digging into pushing my career forward.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Soupless aims to not take itself too seriously in a world where many feel they are not good enough to succeed, while truly working tirelessly to improve and make an impact. We began as two college roommates, Matthew and Aidan, who were freshman at Belmont University. We vaguely knew each other before coming to school, but quickly realized that we shared many of the same interests and motivations, which at the core stemmed from an eagerness to really build something meaningful and inspiring. We first connected in this way through the creation of songs, both being songwriters ourselves, with Matthew having extensive knowledge of production and mixing which we could use to create commercially viable songs. With this formula as a blueprint, we scaled up our operation, all while operating out of our dorm room, doing everything from content creation to every step of making a fully mastered song underneath our twin sized bunk beds. As we have continued to learn over the year or so that we have been operating, we have truly found that there is nothing that we can’t do ourselves, and we believe that showing this to people can motivate them to feel the same way. With this perspective, we have gotten places we thought were impossible, breaking through these ceilings we once thought were cement, but in reality are clouds. From being two nerdy kids in a dorm room at our start only a year ago, we now have a band with growing success and notoriety, which is a beautiful thing to behold. As we started with the song at the core, we continue to prioritize the quality and essence of our music and individual songs over everything else. Without great, meaningful music, all the rest that we have built doesn’t matter. As we continue on, we keep each other in check, remembering what matters, and not being led astray by the easy ways out that life often presents to us. Truly, we hope that by doing this, others can create freely and without the bars of expectation, trying new and innovative things, and believing in themselves, as we try to do everyday.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is the process of creating nothing from thin air. It’s so satisfying to me to enter a session, a shoot, or even a day of content creation with absolutely nothing but an idea. Then, you pour into that idea for hours, staying fully immersed in making, experimenting, trying, searching for something that is hard to describe and that didn’t exist before, and eventually, walking away with something tangible. That process of going from nothing to something, and that transition being solely up to the creatives involved is what is so rewarding to me. And afterwards, it’s always so nice to listen to a demo of a brand new song that we spent hours that day inventing or watching the first export of a video we put together. It’s just very rewarding to me to make anything from scratch.

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Society’s expectations and comparisons often ostracize artists truly doing whatever they can to express themselves. I believe the effect of this inhibits growth of young, upcoming artists, that may not have a certain level of talent to begin with, or start late, as they may be told they are not good enough to succeed or that they are wasting their time. I don’t think that there’s any way to truly get somewhere in any field without taking time, and overcoming the growing pains that come with learning something new. If society can, I wish that we could look at things from an objective lens, within the context of the art we are consuming. An artist’s first song will never be as good as their hundredth, but getting to that hundredth song under the pressures that artists often face seems to be the most difficult part. As artists ourselves, and as a community, I believe we should uplift people to keep on the path of growth, appreciating the ways that we have improved, while acknowledging, but being inspired by the areas in which we are still lacking.
