Sound, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
CHRIS: My musical journey began in 8th grade when I first started playing the snare drum in my middle school band class. As I progressed into 9th grade in high school, I joined the marching band drumline, where I continued honing my drumming skills. Additionally, I was involved in starting up a few original bands with my friends, taking on the roles of drummer and lead vocalist. I began my professional career as the drummer and backup vocalist for the pop/rock/punk band Rock Kills Kid, which signed with Fearless Records in the early 2000s. During this time, I gained extensive experience through multiple recordings and nationwide tours across the United States. After my stint with Rock Kills Kid, I transitioned to focus on singing and songwriting. A few years during Covid, I wanted to embark on a solo project releasing several songs that I had written and never released. So I hit the recording studio from 2021-2023 to put those songs out into the world. With little luck, fire, and ambition, I put the solo project aside as I always had the idea of starting up a brand-new project, this time with a full band backing me. So, from there, I linked up with producer, friend, and fellow musician Taylor Carroll of the rock/pop band, LIT in April 2024, to embark on a full-length 10-song LP. From there is when the dawn of Sound Siren came to life.
JEFF: I started playing the drums when I was 11 years old. I was an Allstate musician all through high school and attended music school. Afterwards, I graduated and started working professionally. I’ve been a band director for grades K-8, an adjunct professor of percussion, a private instructor, a director of a nonprofit community music school, and a touring musician/performer. I moved to Los Angeles in 2024 because I wanted to hang with the big dogs.
I’m a professional drummer. I’ve done video shoots, drum tracking, live performances, touring, private lessons, and group percussion lessons. The thing I’m most proud of is ever since I was a kid, I’ve had people older than me telling me that being a professional musician isn’t a reliable or sustainable way to make a living. I’ve proven them all wrong and have had a great career. I love what I do and don’t let other people tell me what I can or cannot do. Being a musician builds a lot of character and resolve.
LUCAS: I got my first guitar at 9 years old, started lessons at 11, wrote my first original song at 15, and started my first band at 16 and I haven’t stopped writing since. Singing was something I came to by accident — a metal band I was in needed a singer and my co-guitarist arbitrarily said I should do it. 12 years and hundreds of YouTube videos later, and I still love it. Music has always been inside of me and always will be.
If I’m known for anything, it’s probably my vocal harmonies and melodic Midwest emo-inspired guitar riffs. I’m most proud of the collaborations over the years with some incredible musicians, touring the East Coast, and playing Starland Ballroom — that was for sure a highlight of my music career.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Sound Siren is an electrifying new band led by frontman, guitarist, and songwriter Chris Poulson, who is renowned for his previous role as the drummer of the acclaimed rock/pop band Rock Kills Kid. The band signed with Fearless Records in the early 2000s and later with Reprise Records. Having been focused on singing and songwriting for the last decade, Chris brought to life his idea of a full band. Debuting in late 2024, Sound Siren features an exceptional lineup, including Aaron Bolaño on lead guitar, Lucas Caputo on guitar and backup vocals, Alex Grossfeld on bass and backup vocals, and Jeff Samataro on drums.
Together, we create a powerful fusion of pop-punk and pop-rock infused with alternative elements that captivate listeners. Our sound draws inspiration from bands like Simple Plan, Sum 41, Blink-182, New Found Glory, Foo Fighters, and Jimmy Eat World, ensuring we resonate with fans of all ages. Our music is not just catchy; it’s an anthem for anyone looking to embrace the vibrant energy of rock.
We burst onto the scene with our debut single, “The Other Guy,” in September 2024, followed by the gripping tracks “Parasite” in November and “One of Them” in December. Our latest release, a heartfelt rock ballad titled “Time,” debuted on January 24, 2025, and has already begun to make waves. But that’s just the beginning—we have a lineup of exciting singles and a 10-song full-length album produced by Taylor Carroll of LIT on the horizon.
We signed with management shortly after our debut release and obtained endorsements with the renowned guitar strings and accessories company Ernie Ball, as well as the San Diego-based clothing company Dirtbag Clothing. Get ready for an unforgettable experience as Sound Siren takes the stage for our debut of live shows starting in early 2025. This is your chance to witness a rising force in the music world—don’t miss out on seeing Sound Siren in action!
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
CHRIS: At times I wished I was told that the music world isn’t exactly all sunshine and rainbows. It can be pretty tough and have some surprises that can come out of nowhere. However, you just have to be aware, expect the unexpected and do your job and do it well to the best of your ability. Which no one can ever deprive you of that. Being Happy and enjoying what you do is key. Sometimes the freedom to do what you want and play what you want isn’t always an option, especially when you’re a signed act. The music business is a bit tricky. But, as long as you’re able to express yourself and be the Real YOU, then happiness is bound to carry through your musical journey, or in just about anything that you do.
To me, that’s true success!
JEFF: Anybody who says being a musician is a smooth road hasn’t been a musician for very long. Being a musician builds thick skin because you’re constantly getting looked over, ignored, ghosted, or flat-out disrespected. You just have to work insanely hard, keep going, and believe in your abilities. The only way people fail is if they give up.
LUCAS: It hasn’t been an easy road by any means. I took a break from playing in bands in the latter half of my 20s to pursue film school and other types of creative work. Now, playing again feels like a homecoming.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Pursuing a music career is not easy, and we recognize the challenges that accompany it. When you commit to something, you explore every possible avenue to achieve success, however you define it. For us, success is about doing what we love and enjoying every moment. It involves meeting and connecting with other musicians, performing great shows across the country, and living the dream. Sometimes, it’s not about money or fame; it’s about fulfilling what you believe is your purpose on this earth.
