Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sophie Nogar. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Sophie, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you share a story about the kindest thing someone has done for you and why it mattered so much or was so meaningful to you?
Dea Lavoie is a one of kind owner that you will not find in any other business. She cares more about the customer she just met than herself. Dea dedicates her loving heart, kind soul, and fairy godmother magic everyday to keep her dream of this bookstore alive. The booksellers she considers to be family, not employees. If you’re sick, she’s the first one offering soup! If you need to move, she’s telling her husband to grab his truck. If it’s August, she’s already buying your Christmas present.
Yes, the question is the kindest thing anyone has ever done for me, but Dea does kind things all the time. I’ve worked for corporate companies, while they have their perks, nothing will ever beat working at this mom & pop shop and that’s because of Dea.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Second Star to the Right Books is a home for all! Primarily a Children’s Bookstore, we focus on making sure every child feels welcome, included in the books on our shelves, feels seen and heard, knows this bookstore is a safe place for them.
A former elementary teacher, Dea Lavoie, desired owning a bookstore. Not just any bookstore, a place for kids to have adventures, find the magic in reading, enjoy author events and birthday parties, book clubs, fun themed events throughout the year; a place for people to call their home.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
This world is made up of all types of kids, and they need all the support they can get on their journey. As a kid you’re busy figuring out life, your emotions, homework, navigating relationships with friends and family, who you are as an individual. The world offers so much and so little at the same time for resources. Although Second Star may not have all the answers, we want to provide as many as we can. Our goal is to make sure our bookshelves have every child represented from identity to ethnicity to gender to simple or hard issues you may face to who you love.
Allowing children to discover themselves, to read about all sorts of people around the world, will help them grow and make this world more understanding and welcoming to all.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Knowing we’re putting more readers, magic, and love into this world.
