Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sophie Nelson-Crouse. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Sophie , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Are you happier as a business owner? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job?
Yes, I am ecstatic about being a business owner. I don’t see myself working a regular job after being self-employed for the last few years. It’s mostly because I enjoy the flexibility of having more free time to enjoy my hobbies. The last time I worked a regular job was before I took an educational leave. Upon finishing my law studies abroad I came back to Canada and delve right into entrepreneurial mode. It was the best decision I could have made. Although it was tough the first few months getting things going and finding clients I was still happy being a business owner and starting something from scratch. It was self-gratifying to see my hard work coming to fruition. Having a regular job is still rewarding when you’re truly passionate about what you do. However, in my case I wanted to create a business model based on learning what this industry was missing, taking notes and listening to people’s concerns, and using this insight and my own visions to provide more value to the consulting industry.
Sophie , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I own and manage two companies. EBMS Inc is a practice management consulting firm, which operates in Michigan, Ontario, and the United Kingdom for professionals such as (doctors, dentists, vets, lawyers, chiropractors, and engineers, or any small to mid-size business owners with revenue of 5 million or less. My company provides business consulting, leadership development, and talent acquisition. We also assist them in compliance or even grant proposals, and more for those professionals who are either looking to grow or find efficient ways to run their practices. I also own Elite Cleaning a property management and cleaning service that serves Windsor-Essex County. I heavily rely on constructive feedback from my clients which is why I strive to improve my business model. I believe listening to your client’s as well as employees’ needs has to be a core value to making a successful business. At the same time, it is essential to emphasize mutual respect on both ends which is why my recurring clients are proud to make Elite their go-to service provider. We wouldn’t be where we are today without our excellent team members. They consistently go over and above clients’ expectations and are the foundations of Elite.
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
My business partner is my life partner/ husband (Jason) and to him, I give so much credit for his patience when teaching me all I needed to know about running a business. During our first year as business owners things were tough, in terms of getting clients, how to market, and getting going, but he was always positive and his unwavering support is what keeps me going with the business. At times, I may get discouraged but he is always willing to lay a helping hand. We both grew up with fathers who were business owners so having these examples of hard work and resilience to look up to made our commitment to embark on this entrepreneurial journey much more attractive.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
I worked a regular job for many years before starting the business, but my partner was the one who initially came up with the idea of starting the firm. He is doing very well in his field, he’s in finance and he loves what he does. I had just finished law school when the pandemic hit. My career was stalled so he pushed me to give it a go, we invested some of our savings and from that, we were able to get going and here we are three years later. We are fairly new but we are committed to bettering ourselves, our community and are confident that our work will stand out.
