We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sophie Lagan. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sophie below.
Hi Sophie, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
Initially, my Dad didn’t want me to go into the music industry. He told me there was a 1% success rate, and then went on to explain how many of those came from privileged backgrounds, which left me with an even slimmer chance. Whether ironically or fortunately, the stubbornness that I inherited from him didn’t allow me to let go of my dream, I didn’t care how I was going to get there or how long it took, I have never taken my eyes off the prize. My Mum supported me fully in every decision I made – “Darling, you can be whatever you want to be!” Hence the combination of my Dad’s tenacity and high expectations, and my Mum’s unconditional love and support has made me who I am today.
Sophie, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am at my core, someone who feels very deeply. From an early age, the only thing I could imagine myself dedicating my life to was music. I am lucky enough to have been able to develop my talents to such a level that I can transmit those feelings through music. My goal is to ease people’s pain where possible, to give them an outlet, to provide a backdrop to the most memorable days of their lives. If I can change people with my music, if I can make them think, if I can move them, I will die happy.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
The best thing society can do to support creatives in the current climate is to invest in us. Changes in the way music is both created and consumed has left a question mark above the value of music in general. What’s more – the expectation of an independent artist to create entertaining, consistent content, be their own social media manager, marketer, investor etc as well as hone their craft, make a living out of it or maintain a side hustle, possibly support a family and maintain a connection to the divine from whence all inspiration comes – that’s asking quite a lot!
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I wish I had known about my internal resources earlier in my journey. I wish I had known how easy it is to switch off from the chatter of the outside world, just by taking one deep, conscious breath. I wish I had known how much power lay within me during all the times,I felt helpless and like I was running out of time or options or support. Everything you need is within you. Every answer, every next step, all the love and faith in the world that you need to move forward is within you.
