We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sophie and Casey Beres a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Sophie and Casey thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. The first dollar your business earns is always special and we’d love to hear how your brand made its first dollar of revenue.
Casey: “Our website went live after Summer 2020. We kept trying to promote the link on our socials, but it just was not engaging well with our audience. We started giving up on the website. A couple weeks later, Soph and I were swirling around on our office chairs one evening when – DING! Our very first online order came through! It was for a designer pair of custom sneakers in the color orange. It was super exciting for two reasons: 1) We had no idea who this person was in real life, which made us feel like a REAL BUSINESS and 2) The color choice he selected was one we had not yet worked with. It was such a rewarding feeling. We immediately drove to Dunkin Donuts to celebrate (because a good donut is always the move)!”
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Sophie: “Brushedbysophh was actually born because of my disappointment in a pair of “custom” art sneakers that I ordered and received from online. I came to find that the “art” on the se shoes was actually just cheap stickers. I was complaining to Casey about it and just decided to rip the stickers off and hand paint the art that I wished was already on it. And so came my very first pair of custom made sneakers! I shared the finish product on my social media accounts and my friends were so impressed. I think there had to be about eight people that wanted me to paint their sneakers, too. After realizing that this could be a fun side hustle, Casey came on board not too long after.
Three years later and Brushedbysophh has blossomed into a fully customizable apparel shop. We offer a wide range of hand painted services, including clothing and decor.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Casey: “The key behind our growth is consistency! We set a content schedule for ourselves and stick to it.
Posting consistently on social media shows a growing audience that you are committed to creating content and providing a source of entertainment from them. And, the more people who view and engage with your content, the more people your content gets recommended to. This all then equals organic growth! If you only post here or there, or are always fluctuating with your schedule, you are bound to lose trust from an audience and to not increase reach.”
We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
Sophie: “My co-founder is my older sister, Casey – but she is also my best friend! We grew up always sharing a room, so we were constantly together and in the same space. This meant that we had to learn to resolve our differences from a very early age, which proved difficult because we had very different personalities. I was always very confident and into sports whereas Casey was very timid and spend most of her time reading. There were quite a few trials in our journey to friendship but I wouldn’t change it for the world.”
