Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sophia Sinner. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Sophia thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s jump back to the first dollar you earned as a creative? What can you share with us about how it happened?
I’ve been doing music for 6 going 7 years. I had a performance at Arlene’s Grocery NYC in my 3rd year of doing music and had my first 20 minute set. Being a performer is a huge dream of mine, the lights, live band, theatrics, and the audience has always been very electrifying to me. That performance is one of my favorites til this day. Having so many people come support and enjoy my set, I was on cloud9. The next day I wrote my first single out on all platforms “TROPHY” on the feeling I got after having an eventful night filled with nothing but passion and joy. This isn’t the first song I wrote but the first song I released that shockingly got 41K streams. As an underground independent artist I could not believe it. This song has been sold on iTunes and not only views I received but money in my artist bank account. This really taught me that you can be supported by your passion as long as you work hard for it.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a 23 year old female East Flatbush Brooklyn based R&B singer and rapper, raised under a Bajan (Barbados) Household. When my mother moved she left me with my dad who raised me into the young lady I am today. My dad been a dj all my life so music always surrounded me. When my mom left my father was in his prime of his career, but he had a six-year-old daughter to take care of and as I get older and more persistent in my music career, my number one goal is to give back to him. I started off with writing poetry and entered into mixing instrumentals to my poems, making music around 17. I went to a performing arts high school that I eventually graduated early from and went straight to college. I always loved the performing arts since young watching BET and Grammys in the 2000’s. As an artist I have a strength of versatility. Sophia Sínner is two ulterior egos that I hold within myself. It’s nothing that was created but who I am. While writing something comes over me and takes total control. “Sophia” is fun fact my middle name and that refers for my R&B singing voice and soft sexy demeanor. “Sínner” or “Sinna” is the unapologetic Hip hop rapping voice, and refers to my confident star girl demeanor. I take music very seriously, it’s all I have. I model and act as well but music is so therapeutic, universal and most importantly it’s infinite. I want to leave behind a legacy when I’m not here on this earth and I already feel like I have my foot there with my music video “TROPHY”. It is my greatest accomplishment. But I do aspire to go beyond my current goals that I have and create timeless music.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
When I started doing music, I didn’t realize that social media had a big play on how you’re seen in modern society. Before I ever started releasing music on platforms, I was performing at any chance I got, but it becomes a downfall when you perform and you have no social media for people to follow up and gain that fan base. The best way to gain followers is to show yourself in every aspect whether that’s performances video shoots, photo shoots, collaborations with other artist or any type of creative work is the best way that you can build your social media. In the 21st century social media is one of the biggest interactive platforms. Nowadays, you get to know someone based off their social media so when I wanted to introduce myself as an Artist , one of the biggest things I had to do is to become very interactive. I learned you don’t gain followings if you don’t show yourself to people as well showing yourself helps you down the road on how to present yourself. So one advice when presenting yourself is to be honest. There’s millions of people in this world that’s willing to know you and very excited to support The passion and career that you chose for yourself
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the amount of people that you could connect together to a feeling that you simply wrote about. It’s electrifying to know that there’s other people in this world that can relate to you, that could connect with your emotions and especially support the journey that youwalk upon. It’s very scary being an artist because society picks and chooses the next big thing. It’s not always about how many views you have or how you look or what you do exactly. As well being an Artist, you have to be very vulnerable in expressing your emotions. there’s a lot of people that won’t like what you do butThere’s some people that do, but when you can get a collective of multiple people it’s an amazing feeling. One moment that I long for is a stadium of people repeating my lyrics. I think I may faint mid performance cause that in itself I hope to accomplish.
