We recently connected with Sophia Phoenix and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Sophia, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
The way you were loved is the way you will love, or, what you will rebel against… What my parents did right was love me exactly the way I was. I didn’t grow up being judged so now that’s my blueprint for loving others. If I wanted to eat food on the floor like a cat, my mom would serve me there. If I wanted to dress like a boy, my mom would cut my hair. If I wanted to play guitar, my dad bought me one, if I was interested in something, my dad would encourage it. Maybe it was the poverty and the Catholic undertones of my parents but they always seemed to make me feel like what comes naturally is inherently divine.

Sophia, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I shook hands with the universe to pursue the arts and I’ve been keeping my end of the deal ever since. I am a writer who sings, a singer who models, and a model who acts. I’m endlessly creative, terrible at math and releasing my new album in 2025. I like pasta, marijuana, fireplaces, freshly painted nails, cats, rough faces, the smell of jasmine, money, late nights and hot water. What can I say? I’m another artist online but if you’re reading this, my music is for that person who needs a solo road trip.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I moved to Los Angeles at 19 with big beautiful dreams. I left at 29 broken and confused. I want to take the credit for the pivot, but the truth is life did it for me. I was stuck in a loop but when the pandemic hit, I knew it was time to change. I moved back home to Oregon and started over again. I changed my last name, cut my hair, let go of fake friends, reconnected with my family and started my first real relationship. I am still working on my mental health, writing fresh music, facing hard truths, and all that jazz. While the world was falling apart in 2020, I welcomed all destruction in my life. I wanted to burn into ashes to see what is reborn. Where I live there is. a nearby town named, “Phoenix.” It was literally covered in ashes but in the midst of burned-down buildings I saw a sign that said “Welcome to Phoenix!” I began legally changing my last name the next day.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
That you don’t have to be sad in order to be deep. The tortured artist is a delicious trap to fall into if you want to justify your addictions, personality disorders or selfishness. I spent years embracing pain. Gravity will always help you go down, but what’s really punk rock is to go up.
