We recently connected with Sophia Habib and have shared our conversation below.
Sophia, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?
Being an artist is all I know! There’s never been a plan B or what if it doesn’t work out. At the same time, I’ve always had a regular job. That’s not a ‘what if’. It’s reality, for all artists until we’re big enough to make money from music. I teach vocal lessons, I conduct a choir and I’ve worked in hospitality for the longest time. I am also co-owner of a restaurant, and club called ‘BIRD’ in Rotterdam. So I have a lot of jobs, and I love all of them, but at the end of the day it is all for 1 thing. It’s so I can pay for my rent and pay my team: producers, stylists, creative director etc. I also have to say, by working these jobs I’ve also grown a lot on the business side of my artistry. I know how to handle contracts, meetings, how to build teams and manage schedules. So to me it’s all the same thing. I work very hard to achieve my goals and I’ll do whatever it takes.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My musical journey started quite early on. We had a grand piano at home and I begged to have piano lessons so I could finally play it. My childhood was filled with music, mostly classical I’d say because that runs in the family. I had classical piano lessons for 6 years. And thats how I descovered how deep my passion for music is. I also knew that playing the piano wasn’t my vessel. It was my voice, so I moved on to having vocal lessons and that’s when I knew I’d be singing forever. I started writing songs around the age of 14. At that point I’d already had a rocky childhood and a lot of things to process and talk about. I carried on to study music at the conservatory and started building my brand as artist, really figuring out what my sound is and what I want to say to the world. Now I’m mostly creating music that I love, visuals and telling stories. I also write songs for others which I enjoy a lot too. I’ve come to the point where I’m exploring my queerness, gender fluidity, and Lebanese heritage in my music. It’s deeply personal, but I think it’s universal too.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I wish I knew how the industry works earlier. I’ve spent a lot of time being angry, and sad about the fact that It’s not about the talent or art at all. I had to figure that out the hard way.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
If I’m being honest, a lot of the time it isn’t rewarding it all. It’s very easy to forget what it’s all about. The moments I’m happiest, most in touch with myself are the moments I completely forget about the reward, and what It could mean or where It could take me. It’s when I’m creating art, pure and honest. Together with my producer or with other artists/writers who inspire me. Thats when I remember why I do this. It’s eventually not for the succes. It’s about creating something new.
