We were lucky to catch up with Sophia Fossano recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Sophia, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
There are many ins and outs of modeling. When I first started out modeling it was a struggle to stand out and be seen. It is super important to know EVERYTHING about this industry. If you aren’t a runway model you still should perfect your runway walk and if you aren’t a print model you should still perfect your posing and angles. There are so many people in this industry so being able to perfect your craft and be easy to work with is super important. When you are at a photo shoot you should be able to keep a consistent flow of different poses while the photographer is shooting. You should already know what your next pose will be. It also is super important to know your lighting. See where the lighting is coming from and play with that. Never face away from a light causing you to be a shadow! To practice set up a mirror and see how your body looks when you move to help you come up with poses and facial expressions. Set up a light and see how it plays off your face and body when you move. When it comes to runway practice walking around your house doing daily chores in heels. Also setting up a mirror and seeing how you walk is super helpful as well. Practice makes perfect!
Sophia, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Sophia Fossano and I’ve been modeling for about 4 years now. I have always had an appreciation for the modeling industry growing up. I started off acting as a young child and got into it by reaching out to local talent agencies in my area. Once I got accepted I started going to auditions and really got a feel for the entertainment industry. Once I found out these acting agencies had modeling as an option I immediately signed up. First I signed with local agencies. It wasn’t until COVID that I started to submit my portfolio to agencies out of state. In 2021, I signed with my first out-of-state agency BMG in Chicago. It’s been four years now and I am signed with MMG in NY, BMG in CHI and ATL, and a couple of local agencies. I’ve gotten to work with amazing brands like Cadillac, Chevrolet, Joico, Kevin Murphy, OGEE, and more. I have also gotten to walk in New York Fashion Week this year which was absolutely amazing. I hope to keep growing and learning in this industry as there are more exciting things to come!
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a model is definitely being able to help businesses make their ideas come to life. I love meeting and working with so many businesses and hearing what their goals are for their brand and what they want out of it. Hearing so many different stories is so inspiring to me because it shows how much hard work and dedication it took for them to get where they are. I think being able to recreate the brands’ thoughts and ideas is super rewarding because it helps their brands grow just as much as it helps my brand grow. I think being able to connect an have a good relationship with the brands you work with and encounter in the modeling industry is super important because those connections can last forever!
How did you build your audience on social media?
I always have been a huge fan of social media. I love posting pictures and making fun videos whether that’s on Instagram or TikTok. It wasn’t until I started going live on TikTok as a job, that I noticed a huge change in my followers and social media accounts. I never knew that could be a job let alone you could grow a following from it. I have realized while doing this that consistency is key. Don’t be afraid to post a certain video just post it! If you are consistent on social media it allows people to be able to keep up with your content. Also making content that you enjoy making is super important because it allows you to be creative. Since I have started posting on TikTok and Instagram I have been able to get sent products and work with so many amazing brands. It has been amazing the amount of connections have made through social media and how much it has benefitted me in the modeling industry as well. Never be afraid to post!
