We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sophia Elliott. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sophia below.
Sophia, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?
I genuinely love being a ghost tour guide here in downtown Savannah. Although it can be difficult at times, being a tour guide has really helped me grow personally as well as professionally. It has helped me overcome my stage fright, taught me how to be a better public speaker and helped me to become a more confident individual altogether. I truly enjoy bringing smiles to peoples faces when I tell them all the crazy stories Savannah has to offer and even learning new stories myself! I do find myself wondering what it would be like to go back to having “normal” jobs but as soon as I do a tour that consideration for going back to that “normal” lifestyle is forgotten about. Even if I do struggle at times making this a full-time career, the joy and wonder that I get to spread to other people makes it all worth it.
Sophia, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have always loved history, especially the folklore side of it all. I grew up watching paranormal investigators, history channels, big foot documentaries, etc. so I have always found this topic of ghosts mixed with history very interesting to me and I would say that is what made me interested in pursuing this career choice in the first place. Our company offers walking ghost tours in the historic district of Savannah. I personally do the pub crawls, regular ghost tours, and the ultimate tours. I understand there are many ghost tours in Savannah but what makes us more unique than the rest of them is that we love to cater to our guests interests. Before I start my tours I like to converse with my groups to really understand what they want to see and hear that night and sort of formulate the tour to what I think will intrigue them the most.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My main goal that drives me in this creative journey of being a tour guide is that I want this to be my career until I retire. Maybe not ghost tours forever but definitely bringing people out to interesting places to teach them about interesting topics. Right now I am studying marine biology at Savannah State University and my plan is to get this degree and use it to start my own eco tours in the future. I would love to be able to bring people out on boats and teach them about the ocean and all the life inside of it so that they can hopefully understand the importance in keeping them conserved and I truly believe this is one of the best ways to start that career path. Right now I am focused on gaining as much experience and talent for the craft as possible so that one day I can use this craft for good.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect is waking up every day knowing I am truly doing what I love and feel most passionate about. I may not be saving the oceans just yet but I am definitely helping make Savannah the wonderful attraction it is today and that’s a really good feeling to have.
