Today we’d like to introduce you to Sophia Demas.
Hi Sophia, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I began experiencing miracles when I was 19. I define a miracle as getting exactly what you need at just the right time. At the time, I was struggling with two issues that seemed unsolvable. Up until then I had bought into my mother’s law of no sex until marriage. I had met Rob, a 27-year old man whom I was extremely attracted to and felt deeply conflicted–marriage seemed unsavory to me and I didn’t want to die a virgin. There was also a woman in my class that didn’t like me even though she didn’t know me. I considered myself a good person and I needed the approval of others. I had a bizarre dream that began with me on stage wearing a wedding dress in a plexiglass box with no groom in sight. The dream ended with me in the same wedding dress laying in a coffin. I woke up in a panic, thinking that this was portending my imminent death. I got up and walked to Rob’s house at 1:30 am. After I related the dream to him he told me that this wasn’t about a physical death, but that my beliefs that weren’t working for me anymore needed to die in order for them to be replaced with new beliefs that better served me. He then read poetry he had written about me that expressed exactly what I was feeling. Within two months of meeting Rob, both of my issues had been resolved. I was transformed into a different person. My first sexual experience with Rob was amazing and I never cared what anyone thought of since. I quit seeing Rob. It was as if he was an angel that appeared out of the blue to help me arrive at a new perspective. This was not lost on me and I began paying attention to things that appeared out of the blue.
I did not want to get married or have kids, and the last thing I wanted to do was write a book. The Universe, however, had other plans. The miracles that I have experienced have helped formulate my belief that Divine Intelligence wants us to be happy and find our true purpose, and communicates with us in many clever ways—via dreams, a stranger’s message, or by placing coincidences in our path to nudge us via our intuition. When I discovered that by taking action on a coincidence we co-create miracles with the Divine, I wrote my book, The Divine Language of Coincidence—How Miracles Transformed My Life After I Began Paying Attention.
The miracles were too numerous to cram into one book so I plucked out the ones that related to death included in my second book, Consciousness Beyond Death—True Stories of Signs, Messages, and Timing.
Interestingly, both books have garnered the attention of scientists! I knew that scientists studied consciousness, but had no clue that they also study coincidence! And lucky for me, just before the publication of my second book, a new field of study has emerged–after-death communication (ADC). The Scientific and Medical Network invited me to join a group of esteemed scientists that study paranormal phenomena as the only non-scientist/academic member, and asked me to help plan and participate in the Synchronicity Summit. It was so well received that they published a book of the scientists’ essays, The Playful Universe. Mine is chapter 17!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Gratefully, I have glided through my life pretty smoothly and can truthfully say that I am sublimely happy. But that doesn’t mean that there weren’t obstacles along the way. When they were happening, I questioned God why he was doing these things to me. But I can honestly say that later on, I thanked Him for every one of them. They prevented me from getting into unhealthy relationships, working at unsuitable jobs, and prevented me from almost certain death. My faith is unshakable.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
It was difficult to select a category, as I have had three diverse careers–a decade in architecture that included coming to Philadelphia right after graduating from architecture school in 1979 to work with R. Buckminster Fuller, the renowned futurist and modern day Leonardo da Vinci. This was followed by another decade in fashion when I ran my own business, Sophia Demas Couture. I went back to school and graduated with a degree in counseling psychology when I was 50. I discovered that my life’s true purpose was helping others, and created Living a Fearless Life, a 12-workshop program designed to enhance self-esteem in at-risk women that was piloted in the Philadelphia Prison System, Currently, my employer is the Salvation Army. I work part-time in a residence that houses ex-trafficked women as an in-house counselor.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
The very things I had decided that I didn’t want in my life–a husband, kids, or writing a book. Thank God I kept my mind open ajar to recognized signs and take action on them. I was successfully single until the age of 45 when I married Frank, my life’s wonderful co-pilot. In 2011, Through one of my mentors, Fr. Stephen, I met a beautiful 18-year old girl with an incredible past who was living in a homeless shelter. Frank and I adopted her and she has brought us the greatest joy. She is now married, living in Greece, and working as a biostatistician and epidemiologist. And I’ve written TWO books, currently contemplating a third one!
