We were lucky to catch up with Sophia Coaxum-Davis recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Sophia, thanks for joining us today. Owning a business isn’t always glamorous and so most business owners we’ve connected with have shared that on tough days they sometimes wonder what it would have been like to have just had a regular job instead of all the responsibility of running a business. Have you ever felt that way?
As a someone who owns a business and who holds down a full time job it can be challenging in ways, mainly with there not being enough time in the day. But doing what I love affords me an escape sometimes, from the mundane tasks at my everyday job. After work I’m in full grind mode, cranking out new ideas for the business and how I can make it better. One day I’ll be able to focus solely on the business, but now I manage.
Sophia, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Sophia and I am the owner, artist and maker behind Âme Naturals. I am a wife and mother to two amazing littles who constantly push me toward my greatest potential. Âme means soul in French, which perfectly describes what my company is about. Passion turned purpose; Âme strives to create a personal experience through the use of handcrafted items offered with care and creativity meant to inspire. I’ve carefully crafted a company I am proud of, creating one of a kind pieces for you to cherish for a lifetime. Each furniture, home decor and art piece is unique and possesses an heirloom quality that are built to last. It doesn’t hurt that the candles and soaps smell good too!
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Since my main circle of clients is small at the moment, a lot of what I do is face-to-face, in person sales. The craft fair and maker markets circles is usually where I meet a lot of new business. It’s making that connection in person that keep them coming back. I’ve also been fortunate to make my products available in local shops so that also helps to open up my client lists.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
One lesson I’ve had to unlearn in business, is, there is no such thing as easy business. This thing is hard and you will make mistakes. I’ve spent the last few years growing as an artist and a maker, which comes with its fair share of trial and error. But as you learn, you figure out how to turn mistakes into solutions. It’s how you course correct that sets you apart, especially if you work by yourself. You are only accountable for you.
