We were lucky to catch up with Sophia Alexander recently and have shared our conversation below.
Sophia, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How do you think about vacations as a business owner? Do you take them and if so, how? If you don’t, why not?
Vacations are crucial, and I’ve taken one every day for as long as I can remember. Being an adventurous soul, I constantly seek a life filled with curiosity. I thrive by valuing perspectives and learnings from myself and those with whom I cross paths along the way.
My ideal vacation is with my camera, sketchbook, Micron ink pens, and phone on airplane mode.
Sophia, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Sophia, and I am a Cubanita abstract visual artist with an adventurous soul. I have always been creative and learned the ropes of the design industry on my own, through work experiences, and by enhancing my skills within the educational system.
In 2019, I kickstarted Scar-Studio, an art and design hut, where I ventured into the freelance world by providing creative, strategic solutions to clients in various industries and showcasing my work. My most recent project was conquering a local photography company, Arevalo & Co., by elevating its brand identity through different distribution channels. As a visual artist, I provide photography, graphic design, content development & curation services. When working together, I ensure my organizational and collaborative skills are in line to execute a client’s vision entirely. My artwork varies but is deeply rooted in line art, typography, photography, and mixed media.
Recently, I wrapped up a master’s degree at Florida International University and Miami Ad School in Global Strategic Communications and Art Direction. In lieu, I started working for the newly renovated W South Beach in their marketing department. I pursued my degree to understand better and enhance my skillsets, learn from my weakness and further develop a passion project that will roll out within the following year. While at WSB, I’ve overseen social and digital media initiatives, conducted a property film, kickstarted programming efforts, and directed content shoots to promote the property further. I recently wrapped up CAMP WSB, an innovative summer camp activation for adults bringing together iconic brands within the art, fashion, music & culinary industries.
I may wear many hats, but my driven nature enjoys exploring and learning from each opportunity.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect is being able to gain the respect of my clients. There is no better feeling than the word “thank you” after seeing their vision come to life. It’s the little things.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
I am highly passionate and analytical about my work and have had many highs and lows, but there is no better feeling than just creating. The most important goal is to have others respect the journey.
